Chapter 18 “Good afternoon.” Soohyun smiled gently with a normal greeting, still wary of Kevin’s mood. “Feeling better?”
“Oh, I was always good.” Kevin awkwardly lied, eyes averting Soohyun’s. “Come on, how was your English spelling test last Friday?”
“Hah, you’ll be impressed.” Soohyun grinned instantly, falling into his seat beside Kevin and placing his belongings messily on the table. He went through a whole lot of worksheets, a whole lot of assignments and finally found the paper he wanted. “Here!”
Kevin wasn’t interested, first putting the test aside and then eyeing the mess. “Categorise them.”
“What?”
“Categorise them.” Kevin said surely, gesturing at the mess. “First by subject, then by topic, then by date.”
“No way.” Soohyun blinked at Kevin, then at the pile of papers.
Kevin stared back, waiting. “Korean first.”
The older groaned, knowing there was no way out.
-
“Soohyun-hyung missed quite a lot of practise already.” A teammate complained slightly, looking at a bunch of juniors slacking off. “Everyone’s no longer that interested in practise. We need a stand-in captain or something.”
“He has to study.” Eli raised the point, sighing. “As much as we all love soccer, it won’t land us in a job when we have to work in the society years from now.”
“Will that Kevin Woo really help him?” Another player asked, slightly disbelieving. “Don’t nerds just study all day long? I don’t get how the study buddy thing will change a thing.”
“We’ll just have to hope it would.” The team manager clapped his hands, gathering the players. “Friendly match, split up into two teams. Don’t worry too much about hyung, I heard that if he manages the coming exams, they’ll cut him some slack.”
“Kevin Woo might not…” A grumble from the crowd.
“You boys, just go practise!”
-
Kevin furrowed his eyebrows in concentration, watching Soohyun with eagle eyes as the older walked into the library, ears plugged with earphones, lips moving along as if singing the lyrics.
When the older man sat beside him with a casual greeting, he turned to face him almost instantly.
“What genres do you like?” Kevin asked, effectively stopping Soohyun from keeping his iPod away.
Soohyun looked at Kevin curiously, unable to catch on within the short time. “What what genres? What’s the sudden question about?”
“Ah, just lend me your iPod.” Kevin shook his head, hand reaching out for the electronic device. When he got it, he assigned Soohyun some random questions of varying topics to test what he remembers.
It took Kevin a bit of time before he knew how to maneuver with the only button and the scroll wheel, and yet a bit more to recognise that the songs weren’t arranged. There was a lot of weird artistes names, and even more that were obviously taken from blogs or whatever, seeing how the credits were in the album names instead.
After understanding a bit of the iPod, he then decided to scroll through the massive list of song names. At least the song names should be correct. The younger then tapped the table lightly as he sank into deep thoughts, scribbling some words down after a period of time.
“What are you doing?” Soohyun leaned over Kevin’s shoulder, casually slipping his answers before Kevin.
“Here.” Kevin said simply, passing Soohyun a list of songs. “Type these song titles into your search page, and copy out lyrics to each of the songs. Bring them to me the next time we meet, and we’ll work on them. It’s best if you could memorise them too.”
“HUH?!” The older boy widened his eyes (and mouth), shocked. “What?!”
“Sing it. If you can’t memorise it, sing it.” Kevin shrugged.
“What for?”
“It’s to let you familiarise yourself with the sentence structure and all of English. It helped me a lot when I was learning, and also the pronunciation, etcetera. Anyway, just do it, and meanwhile I’ll search for Korean songs too so your Korean wouldn’t be just a borderline pass.” Kevin explained, before finally taking a look at the answers for the questions he had set for the muscular (and currently dumbfounded) student.
Soohyun stared at Kevin’s head once more, face in awe. “Wow, what exactly is in there?”
-
“Kevin, could I have a word with you?”
Kevin jumped at the sudden meeting with the principal during his lunch. Was it about Kibum? Sitting up straight, he nodded unsurely as the older man took a seat.
“Relax. I was just thinking if you’ve adapted well to the study buddy programme.” The man smiled kindly, and Kevin then understood that he didn’t know a thing about Kibum no longer going for the programme.
“It’s…fine.” Kevin smiled, forcing himself to think of Soohyun while replying.
“Really? That’s good to hear.” Principal Choi chuckled lightly, nodding. “The reason why I asked you that was…well, do you mind taking Shin Dongho too?”
“Huh?” Kevin blinked, slightly taken off guard by the question he hadn’t expected.
“He’s the one younger than you, and although he’s a bit unusual, he’s a pretty cute and good kid.” The principal started. “It’s just that, I think he needs someone that can connect with him to help him. His studies are getting worse, but anyone can tell he’s very smart. So I think I’d have to ask for your help once more.”
“Oh.” Kevin slowly processed the information, thinking about Kibum missing lessons and now having the capacity to teach another student. After agreeing, if the principal found out Kibum disappeared, he’d still have credibility and would probably get a nice recommendation letter. “Yeah, sure, I’ll try my best!”
“I’m sure you will.” The man nodded with a smile. “Teachers have sent feedbacks to me stating the improvements they are witnessing. Kevin, everyone is really glad to have you in our school.”
Blushing at the compliment that he hadn’t received before, Kevin quickly stood up and bowed his thanks. The principal then excused himself and left, probably to tell a teacher that Dongho has after schools sessions with Kevin from now on.
Wow…being praised directly from the most respected person in school. Such an honour left Kevin in a good mood, temporarily forgetting about Kibum.
