Sidebar

I'm new to s2 (and to this community). I'd like to ask for some advice on how to begin... I want to make a right sidebar under the header in A Novel Conundrum. My first question is: which layer would I have to work with? Would it be Layout or Theme? Also, once I start, will I have to hand-code all my previous customization preferences, or can I still use the customization wizard? And will I need to work with the s2 language to do this, or will it just be css?
