This is a simple treatise on equality between the sexes.
It is selfish to leave the restroom with both toilet seat and lid up, as it ensures that gents require no effort upon returning to relieve themselves. Why should the women have to make an effort at something that the men do not?

It is balanced to leave both the lid and the seat down, as it requires equal inconvenience to both sexes to use the toilet upon arrival - considering the time and effort to raise both seat and lid is roughly equal to the effort of lifting just the seat, or just the lid - both of which don't weigh much.
Also, as an aside, the amount of fecal coliform bacteria that become airborne in a restroom can be greatly reduced by closing the lid of the toilet before flushing.
