Women born women

The Vancouver Women's Health Collective just opened a new pharmacy on West Hastings called "Lu's: a pharmacy for women". I was pretty happy to see it, as the collective has been shut down for a while.

Then, I read that the pharmacy will exclude health care services for trans women, only catering to women born as women. I did a bit of research as ( Read more... )

I see what you mean about the "simple" comments. Mea culpa. I just find that the reader responses to any kinds of social issues tend to be reactionary in nature, without showing that they understand the complexities behind the issue. Then again, that could simply be the choice of the editor(s) and/or moderator(s) when it comes to publishing readers' comments.

In my opinion, The Province seems to cater to a kind of 'nimby', close-minded mentality without challenging it to any real extent. I saw similar kinds of responses in the past when it came to issues about how to help people with mental disorders, life on the DTES, etc. A discouraging pattern, but a pattern nonetheless.

I used to work at U.B.C., and I can tell you that I heard more than a few racist comments from both co-workers and my own supervisor. That's just one of several examples that immediately come to mind; there are several more, and whenever it happens I find I become just a little bit more disappointed.

But you're absoultely right, I should also try not to generalize and be so quick to pass judgement, and I will try to keep that in mind whenever I comment, both here and elsewhere. I would like to believe the best in people, but too many years of experience in both my personal and professionl life have shown me that these kinds of close-minded attitudes exist everywhere. However, that's no excuse for me to engage in such close-minded attitudes myself.

And thanks for this: I enjoy reading your posts, and your opinions are always reasonably and intelligently presented.

Yeah you're right on that count, and a friend of mine who's opinion I respect a great deal said that the province is basically a glorified tabloid now... I see her point!

I wonder how much moderation they have on the comments for things like the province or CBC? It doesn't seem like they have any?

I understand the The Globe & Mail does have a web-site moderator whose job includes monitoring reader feed-back to make sure that there's nothing that would be considered racist, sexist, etc., and have heard him interviewed on CBC Radio 1's 'Q'. I would assume that both the CBC and The Province have something similar, for legal purposes if nothing else.
