In my opinion, The Province seems to cater to a kind of 'nimby', close-minded mentality without challenging it to any real extent. I saw similar kinds of responses in the past when it came to issues about how to help people with mental disorders, life on the DTES, etc. A discouraging pattern, but a pattern nonetheless.
I used to work at U.B.C., and I can tell you that I heard more than a few racist comments from both co-workers and my own supervisor. That's just one of several examples that immediately come to mind; there are several more, and whenever it happens I find I become just a little bit more disappointed.
But you're absoultely right, I should also try not to generalize and be so quick to pass judgement, and I will try to keep that in mind whenever I comment, both here and elsewhere. I would like to believe the best in people, but too many years of experience in both my personal and professionl life have shown me that these kinds of close-minded attitudes exist everywhere. However, that's no excuse for me to engage in such close-minded attitudes myself.
And thanks for this: I enjoy reading your posts, and your opinions are always reasonably and intelligently presented.
