Super creamy brie (we had Qualicum Islands brie, which is incidentally served on a scrap of guitar wood from a nearby luthier) + Maple Butter (from Montreal's Jean-Talon market) + pine nuts served on a cracker with a sip of oaked Chardonnay (in this instance, Kettle Valley 2006 Chardonnay from Naramata) = mouthgasm!

Good reality TV apparently depends on inventing "average" underdogs with massive talent each season and then forgetting them to make way for another.

I have to admit my first response was "yes, she's really great, but is the only reason she's getting so much attention because everyone thought she was ugly and therefore couldn't be talented (which is such a logical fail)?"

... but then I realized the reason I was so moved wasn't just that she's so great, but also the realization that maybe the reason she (and Paul) had made it this long without being recognized probably has something to do with the whole attractiveness thing, and maybe they were held back because they didn't "look the part" (whatever that means), but now they're finally on stage in front of the world fearlessly saying "yes, look at ME" (I loved how she provocatively swung her hips at Simon) and getting the recognition they deserve, finally. So it's a bit like a dream come true sort of moment.

And sure, there are plenty of awesome and unrecognized attractive musicians as well, but that doesn't make for such an inspiring "fuck you, social expectations of beauty+talent" sort of story :)

I'm kind of addicted to watching clips of Britain's Got Talent - but honestly, I liked the performances of "Flawless" and "Stavros Flatley" a lot more... I think Susan is really talented, but I think it's more a matter of the packaging attracting attention. All the acts I've seen are wild and awesome... I just feel really good seeing people work really hard, loving what they're doing and getting recognized for it. I watched these things and just felt all warm in the cockles of my heart.
