EAVESDROPPING
Honestly, it was not his fault. He was there first, sitting innocently at his dressing table, sipping at hot chocolate while browsing through a random magazine. He had left the SMAPxSMAP Bistro alone, because the others had been a little preoccupied, and so had decided to enjoy a short stolen moment of relaxation before he had to leave for his next job.
It was not Katori Shingo’s fault that Kimura-kun and Goro-chan chose that moment to walk into the dressing room, apparently too deeply involved in their conversation to notice that there was someone else in there aside from them. He certainly could not be blamed for the way his ears pricked, his hearing suddenly heightened in fascination at the topic of their conversation.
And even though his gaze kept wandering of their own violation to the mirror, stealing surreptitious glances at the reflection of his two fellow Members, who had now settled on the chairs around the larger table in the room, Shingo was most definitely not purposefully eavesdropping on them. No, not at all.
Shingo just happened to overhear them.
Kimura-kun sipped at his cup of hot tea, flipping through a magazine before stopping to study a page. ‘At this time of the year that place would be a nice place for golfing, naa…’
Goro-chan, who had been looking at a handheld mirror while combing his hair, stopped in his actions, and leaned into Kimura-kun to look at the magazine his fellow Member was reading. ‘Sou desu yo ne… [1] The blossoms would be beautiful and the air would be wonderfully scented.’
‘There’s even a tea house where we can go after the game.’
‘Is it the one with the traditional wooden carvings on the wall?’
‘Yep! So, is that a yes?’
There was a short pause, and a glance at the mirror, told Shingo that it had been punctuated by a brilliant smile and an enthusiastic nod from Goro-chan.
Kimura-kun’s trademark grin was his answer, and brown eyes danced with delight. ‘You want me to pick you up?’
‘Is it okay if I drive? There’s another place I would like to show you on the way there. It’s the guitar shop I was telling you about the other day. The owner just called me, and told me that he had some new handcrafted guitars come in.’
‘Sure! That’s awesome!’
Shingo casually, carefully flipped the page as a couple of near silent beeps announced to the eavesdropping man that the two Members were probably checking their schedules. Kimura-kun was the first to successfully find a hole.
‘I’m open next Saturday.’
‘Me too.’
‘Shizuka will be out shopping with the girls, so it all works out.’
‘What time will they be leaving?’
‘Around 2 o’clock. Come at 11. You could have brunch with us, hang out with the girls for a bit, and then we can head off.’
‘I’d love to. 11 it is then.’
The youngest SMAP Member stared at his own reflection, envy written on every line in his expression. Kimura-kun and Goro-chan were planning to go out? And the place they were going to sounded so nice. He wanted to go too! Why was he stuck alone when he could be out there enjoying himself with someone, like his fellow Members? Because you have no holes in your schedule and you wanted some alone time for relaxation, the more rational part of his mind replied.
Shingo brought his mug to his lips, only to realize that he had finished the last drops of his hot chocolate without even tasting it. He froze, wondering what to do. It would be way too awkward for him to approach them now. They seemed to be in a little bubble of their own. His eyes flicked to the mirror as he took in the sight of Kimura-kun and Goro-chan both bending over the magazine, apparently still deep in their conversation, though at a much lower and more intimate volume.
His eyes flicked to the door. The two Members’ back was to the doorway, so just maybe… Shingo got up, slowly shifting from his chair, and edged cautiously around the room, his eyes constantly flickering between his fellow Members and the door.
Finally! He heaved a sigh of relief as he slipped out of the room without drawing their attention, though he had drawn the attentions of quite a few staff members in the hallway.
‘Shingo, what are you doing?’
He froze, before relaxing when he realized that it was only Tsuyopon. His best friend looked at him quizzically, a cup in one hand.
The sight of his friend was the last straw, the final push that Shingo needed. He grinned.
Ah, what the heck! A short outing wouldn’t hurt.
‘Ne Tsuyopon, are you free next Saturday?’
Maybe he could wheedle the location out of Kimura-kun and make it a double date.

[1] "Sou desu yo ne..." Loosely translated to "That's right..."
A/N: Loosely based on Shingo's story of how he had been eavesdropping on Takuya asking Goro to go out. XD It was just too cute for me to resist.
