Tourou Nagashi [1]
Floating Lanterns
Lyrics: Ryuji
Composition: Ryuji
Aa furitsuzuku ame
Aa kigi tachi no koe
Mada kimi wa tasogare
Mada yureru koto naku
Ah, the rain that keeps falling
Ah, the voice of the trees
You're still in the twilight [of your life]
Still unchanging, without wavering
Omou hodo afuredasu koto no ha
So much so that words gush forth
Hosoku karamaru toki no ito
Tayutau hasu no hana
Nagasareta tourou to kimi oeba
Itsuka wa aemasuka
The thread of time that thinly intertwines
The lotus flower [2] that gently drifts
If I chase after you and the lantern that was swept away
Will I be able to meet you one day?
Aa tomedonai ame
Aa kizutsukeru koto
Mou wakaranaku natte
Mou wasurete shimaou
Ah, the rain that never ends
Ah, the fact that I've been hurt
I'm already losing track of it
Let's put it behind us
Rousoku wa se wo chijime katamuku
The body of the candle shrinks, leaning over
Hodoke wa shinai toki no ito
Aragau kimi to te ga
Amari ni kanashikute me wo tojita
Itsuka wa aeru you ni
The thread of time that can't be untangled
Your hand, which resists against it
I felt so sad [at the sight of it], I closed my eyes
I pray that we can meet one day
Tada omou hodo
Motto tooku natte
Nokosareta ishiki wa mou wazuka
Sore demo matteta
It's just, more than you think
It's much further
Faint is the consciousness that remains
Even so, I waited
Sunda kawa wo nagareru uchi ni
Butsukatte yorisoi
Sono tomoshibi ga kieru mae ni
Kizuite kureta nara
While the clear river flows on
Bumping against each other, nestling close
Before that light goes out
If you could notice me
Tada omou hodo
Motto tookunatte
Ima tomoshibi ga
Ima kieru made
It's just, more than you think
It's much further
Right now, the light
Right now, until it goes out
(Douka toki ga modorimasu you ni
Hasu no hana wa dou no hana)
(Please, I'm begging you, may time return to the way it was [when]
The lotus flower is a flower that's in bloom)
Tada omou hodo
Motto tookunatte
Ima tomoshibi ga
Ima kieru made
It's just, more than you think
It's much further
Right now, the light
Right now, until it goes out
(Douka toki ga modorimasu you ni
Hasu no hana wa dou no hana)
(Please, I'm begging you, may time return to the way it was [when]
The lotus flower is a flower that's in bloom)
Me no mae no tourou ga kieru mae ni
Kizuite hoshikatta
Before the lantern vanishes from before my eyes
I had wanted you to realise it
(Kiekake no tourou wo shirimasenka
Aragai tsuzuketa)
(Have you seen the vanishing lanterns?
A continued resistance)
Mou nidoto modore wa shinai
Tourou nagashi no yoru
No longer can we go back [to]
The night when the lanterns float
NOTE:
[1] "Tourou nagashi", or "floating lanterns", also refers to the ceremony performed in Japan where people float lanterns down the river during the final evening of the Bon Festival with the belief that the lanterns will guide the souls of the departed to the spirit world.
[2] In Japan, the lotus flower holds the meaning of death, enlightenment and rebirth. It is revered as a flower that is able to rise from the muddy water of the lake, pond and/or other bodies of water that it grows in, and bloom into a pure and beautiful flower, which symbolises the ability to rise above suffering and attain enlightenment. A lotus flower in bloom lasts for up to three days. The flower than releases its seeds back into the mud where a new flower will grow, much like the cycle of life, death and rebirth.
