"I would like to aim for a solo live that would get the actors as well as the audience fired up."
With Sato Ryuji (Kashuu Kiyomitsu) participating in the upcoming first ever solo live in the "Musical Touken Ranbu" franchise, Otomedia had the chance to interview him about his thoughts on how different the live is from the usual productions and his feelings going into it.
When you received word that there would be a Kashuu Kiyomitsu solo live, what did you think?
Previously, there was a time when I had said that I would like to do a solo live. There was the feeling of, "It's finally become a reality!" I was really happy, but when I heard that I would be doing 16 performances in The Galaxy Theatre, I became anxious about whether there would be that many people who would attend the performance. Even though there are back dancers, to do 16 performances all on my own... (wry laughter)
For the solo live main visual, it is a photo with a different Western-style atmosphere with red as the main colour; how was the photo shoot?
This isn't an edited photo; it really was taken in a crimson red room. Usually, we depart for the front lines with 6 swords, and so, the photo shoot is done in a studio that is suitable for that. I've taken all kinds of shots in this red room.
This is the first "Toumyu" solo live, so how do you think you would want it to be like?
I think that it will be a live that is completely different from the one that is created with 6 people and [it would also be different from] the "Shinken Ranbu Sai", which was a live with the participation of many Touken Danshi [1]. I'm doing the MC on my own, and I don't have a partner to interact with. Depending on what I will be doing alone, I think that I would like to show [the fans] a different type of coolness compared to [how I am] when I'm together with everyone [the rest of the Touken Danshi]. After all, the audience has constantly been watching Kashuu Kiyomitsu, right? When I think of how the entire hall is there to support me and cheer me on, I cannot rest on my laurels. With this live, I would be really happy if the audience is able to deepen their understanding of "Toumyu" and Kashuu Kiyomitsu, and through this live, I would like to get the other Touken Danshi fired up too.
What do you think will become of the audience once they have finished watching the Kashuu Kiyomitsu solo live?
I think that they would probably be entirely spent and be turned to ash after being overly excited and completely fired up (LOL). But I would probably give it my all [in my performance] to the level where I too would turn to ash after every performance, so everyone, let's face each other seriously!
As it is, you have been given all kinds of songs to sing in "Toumyu", but what are the songs that you would like to sing in the solo live?
I would definitely want to sing Kashuu Kiyomitsu's solo song "Tokenai Mahou". Also, there is a song where I think that if Kashuu Kiyomitsu sung it, I would be able to show [the audience] a different kind of coolness, and so if I could, I would like to try singing it.
Last spring, Kashuu Kiyomitsu didn't depart for the front lines during "Mihotose no Komoriuta"; when the Touken Danshi from "Mihotose no Komoriuta" return to the citadel after completing their mission, how would Sato-san's Kashuu Kiyomitsu greet them?
I feel like he would show them the face of a senior. Especially towards Sengo Muramasa, who was brought to life during "Mihotose no Komoriuta" and so would be the most junior of the Touken Danshi in "Toumyu". Although, Ota Motohiro-san, the person who is playing him [Sengo Muramasa] is my senior (LOL).
Mikazuki Munechika and the rest [of Team Sanjou], along with Higekiri and Hizamaru, will be departing for the front lines in the new production; how will Kashuu Kiyomitsu see them off?
I wonder. In "Atsukashiyama Ibun", it was written in the way that showed the Sanjou swords messing around with Kashuu Kiyomitsu, so undoubtedly, they are more skilled than him, but... How Higekiri and Hizamaru would interact with him [Kashuu Kiyomitsu], as of yet, I too have no idea.
In the 2nd part of "Toumyu", which is the live segment, for the merchandise that is used to show support [for the Touken Danshi], if you, Sato-san, yourself, were to create an uchiwa [2] to cheer Kashuu Kiyomitsu on?
It would probably be, "Please untie your hair". Even though it's unlikely that he would do it (LOL).
Aside from Kashuu Kiyomitsu, is there another Touken Danshi that you would like to support and cheer for in a live?
Watching "Mihotose no Komori Uta", I fell in love with Sengo Muramasa at first sight, so [it would be] Sengo Muramasa. To the point where I was waving the penlight with Muramasa's colour even though Ishikirimaru was there! Because I like characters who have a sexiness to them, I think I would write something like, "Please look at me with a provocative gaze", on my uchiwa.
Would you please give us a comment expressing your enthusiasm for the "Kashuu Kiyomitsu Tanki Shutsujin 2017".
This time, I was really very surprised because the number of people who are thinking of wanting to watch Kashuu Kiyomitsu's solo live is larger than I expected. I would like to deliver something that doesn't lose to the fervour of these saniwa [3].

Q: The "Toumyu" Touken Danshi whom you would like to join hands with in the role of tsukkomi [4]?
A: In our citadel, Yamatonokami Yasusada is generally on the boke [5] side and doesn't seem like he would help me much, so Horikawa Kunihiro! Because Horikawa seems like he will do everything, Kashuu Kiyomitsu will take a break (LOL).
Q: The "Toumyu" Touken Danshi you would like to go shopping with?
A: Iwatooshi! Doesn't everyone feel the same? And he seems like the type would would carry your bags for you. In reality, Saeki Daichi-kun is also someone who is strong. If I wanted to go shopping and consult someone on clothing choices, I think it would be Kitazono Ryo-kun's Kogitsunemaru. Even in private, we often go shopping together.
Q: The "Toumyu" Touken Danshi whom you would like to cook for you and whom you would cook for?
A: I rarely cook, so I would like Sakiyama Tsubasa-kun, who plays Ishikirimaru, to cook for me. It seems like he's good at cooking; just the other day, he suddenly sent me a photo of taco rice [6] with the accompanying comment, "I made this" (LOL).
Q: The "Toumyu" Touken Danshi who you would like to co-star with on stage?
A: Firstly, the ones whom I've yet to co-star with are the "Mihotose no Komoriuta" members, so... Araki Hirofumi-san's Nikkari Aoe. I'm curious about the part of him that seems so calm. As for Kashuu Kiyomitsu, I feel like he would be able to become friends with him [Nikkari Aoe] through Ishikirimaru.
Q: The "Toumyu Touken Danshi" whom you would like to come and help you out during the solo live?
A: Imanotsurugi! I would leave the MC to Imanotsurugi, who is played by Ohira Shunya, and Kashuu Kiyomitsu would return to the wings (LOL). Shunya-kun's Imanotsurugi is very good at rousing the audience, so I think that he would be a reliable helping hand.
NOTE:
[1] "Touken Danshi". Loosely translated to "sword boys". This term is used to refer to the characters in Touken Ranbu.
[2] An uchiwa is a traditional Japanese hand-held fan. In Japan, fans [the people LOL] usually bring these uchiwa to concerts to show the performers their support, and these uchiwa are often decorated with pictures, the names of the performers and sometimes, even specific catchphrases and/or requests, like "Please blow me a kiss" xD
[3] "Saniwa". This term is used to refer to fans of the Touken Ranbu franchise who act as the master of the Touken Danshi with the ability to bring the Touken Danshi to life and send them back into the past to defeat the opposing forces that try to change history.
[4] "Tsukkomi". Loosely translated to "the straight man" or "the bully". He is one-part of the traditional Japanese comedic partnership. The "tsukkomi" sets straight any ridiculous statements made by the "boke", sometimes even berating the "boke" for his air-headedness. HERE [5] "Boke". Loosely translated to "the funny man" or "the dumb one". He is one-part of the traditional Japanese comedic partnership. The "boke" acts like an air-head and makes the most ridiculous statements, which the "tsukkomi" jumps in and corrects. If anyone is interested in finding out more, please check out this link:
