CONTROL
Nakai Masahiro was a person who liked control, who liked to be in control.
Which was why he insisted on calling Kimura Takuya, “Kimura-san”, no matter how much his friend protested, no matter how much it annoyed his fellow Member.
Okay, so maybe a part of the reason he took so much pleasure in calling his friend “Kimura-san” was because it so thoroughly aggravated the other man.
Still, it did not change the fact that Masahiro liked control, and he knew he would lose it if he went back to the old times, to the days when his friend was just simply “Kimura”.
Because it reminded him that when it came to Kimura, the other man was always out of his control; all magnetic charisma and rebellious charm, who had the ability to throw all Masahiro’s carefully constructed defenses out the window. And Kimura would do it, complete with a nonchalantly mischievous smirk and a casual look, simply because he could.
When Kimura called him on his new habit, Masahiro would always respond that it was because they were no longer classmates and school boys, but were each professional entertainers in their own rights and deserved to be respected like the adults that they were.
But those were just excuses really, and sometimes Masahiro wondered if Kimura found them to be as flimsy as he himself thought that they were.
Because it reminded him that no matter how much distance Masahiro tried to put between them, his feelings were out of his control; that even though Masahiro had known that their friendship, relationship, would never be the same after Kimura’s marriage, it did not change the fact that he still felt so close to the other man and that their bond, though different, was fundamentally the same; because Masahiro did not let just anyone into his close circle, and when he did, he hung on to them and did not let them go any easier than he had let them in. Of course, though Masahiro refused to acknowledge it, when it came to Kimura, his heart would be a closer description to the place that the other man had claimed rather than just his close circle.
But despite all his careful watch, over his thoughts, over his tongue, Masahiro was human, and humans made mistakes. Occasionally, he would slip up. After all, old habits were hard to break.
And when he did, Kimura always noticed, always.
Masahiro was a person who liked control, who liked to be in control.
But looking now into surprised wide eyes, glowing with a genuine, if a little shy, delight that Kimura too had let slip in his own moment of being caught off-guard, Masahiro was reminded that even as he struggled to find a new, more fitting role for himself in their partnership, he was not alone.
Kimura was struggling too, despite his seeming confidence in continuously reaching out to Masahiro, because just like Masahiro, Kimura was also extremely aware of the new facets that were being uncovered in their friendship, and just like Masahiro, he wanted it to work, this irreplacable relationship that had changed and grown along with them in every new circumstance that they faced.
And, Masahiro couldn’t help but grudgingly admit.
Maybe it wasn’t so bad to lose control.
Occasionally.
