Interesting point -- totally talking off the top of my head and without deep consideration, a few thoughts on it (which are pretty scattershot and not meant to form any unified thesis):
* I could always say you have to spend part of the weekend attuned to a Ring to use between-event skills on that Ring, but I'm not sure that would really accomplish much other than annoying those people.
* If you have a Virtue Ring and there are just no skills under that Ring that appeal to you enough to activate the ring on a typical event, there's really no reason to buy any of them. Virtue Rings serve three purposes: 1. Roleplaying; 2. Plot; and 3. Skills. It is always my fervent hope that PCs will not put skills first in deciding which rings to pursue.
* If you DO find skills under a Virtue Ring header useful, I am at a loss as to why you wouldn't attune it to be able to switch back and forth quickly if you needed to, so you could have your favorite Virtue active by default, and switch if you need to do so quickly. Remember, you can also switch with one minute of roleplaying for free. So if you're a Grace person but have a Courage ring on the side, there's really no earthly reason you wouldn't take a minute to switch to your Courage ring before a big hell battle, then switch back afterwards.
* I do agree that skills that are similar to skills you can get under other headers are not as sexy as skills that are really unique, but I am almost certainly not cool enough to think of really unique skills that also work and are balanced for every single header. Would that I were! But no.
* I do also see the point that if a skill is similar to a non-Virtue skill, it's not as cool if you can't access it without your ring on. Really, though, the problem there is that I shouldn't be putting out Virtue Ring skills that are really similar to existing skills in the first place.
OK, sorry if that was totally incoherent -- trying to type while also talking to Kyra -- not meant to in any way argue or refute any of your points, just spewing random thoughts about them. Will give it further thought.
