Recently, the local publisher in my country made an announcement what would make their comics passable, but with UNDERSCORE and BOLD, so you know, implicitly, they want it done.
Fanbase.
Long time ago, I've been told once that Mr. Editor wants me to have my fanbase FIRST as implicitly they want to make a profit out of it. Which is actually absurd, because fanbase was supposedly made AFTER the artist publishes something, NOT before! And fanbase "happened" naturally, not in the plan of comic artist. Fanbase is formed naturally because people of the same thought that they like the artist and dedicate themselves for it!
Though I want to yell "HELL NO!", but he's the editor, so I kept my mouth shut that time.
That's until the publisher decided they want to make this condition official.
- Make a chapter of your comic in presentable form. Upload it in a webcomic site.
- Promote your comic to everyone! Make a poll or ask them to write a support note to us in comments section!
- Check the number of the pageviews. If you feel that's enough, bring the database to use to complete your submission proposal
*Note: I've tried this once for Bitter Coffee, and guess what: I FAILED anyway so screw this!
WHAT.
THE.
FUCK!
Especially point number TWO! ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO WHORING YOURSELF!? Comic artists are not very known to be "social" because they're BUSY MAKING THEIR COMICS! It's EDITOR's WORK! It's PUBLISHER WORK! HELLO!? "PUBLISH"!? And readers don't always like to comment, and some artists is just love being silent and talk THROUGHOUT THEIR COMICS!! Besides, it's like you can make a CLONE DEVART account and click WATCH YOURSELF! Since when making comics becomes an IDOL POPULARITY CONTEST!?
And basically, if you're demanding from FANBASE, seriously, YOU JUST WANT TO HAVE A SAFE SPOT and are PROUD OF IT!? How GREEDY!! I've seen lots of comics in smackjeeves which has "THOUSANDS" fans just because they're goddamn VIDEO GAME SPRITES and YAOI! Are you sure you want to publish that, considering homo-homo is forbidden in this damn country, and video game sprite comic is OBVIOUSLY stomping copyrights right in your face!?
Luckily, this time I'm NOT ALONE! Lots of usually positive replies becomes tsunami of raeg backdraft that the publisher decided to abort that note and deleted it as if it never happens. Shortly, SCREW this "FANBASE RULE", I hope the Editor learns the lesson from this mistake!
