(no subject)

Me, Jiajia, Po Linn, Zhi and Bettina got, well, addressed by this eccentric writer in Kinokuniya. We were browsing in the Fantasy and Literature sections, and so this radical guy pops out of nowhere. Probably noticed us because we were noisy like hell, and what with Po Linn's squeeing over Qui Gon Jinn. "Kids," he says in a pseudo-Yoda, sagely voice. If he was short and green enough, he could have passed for Yoda. He was wrinkly, though didn't look over 40. "What have I said? Don't read this kind of literature. This is junk."

Apparently, he has approached Zhi and Po Linn before. Jia makes herself scarce. The four of us stare blankly at him.

He goes on about how most books nowadays are "junk", and just because certain authors (here, he plucks out a book) win Nobel prizes, it does not mean it is fine literature. He talks about us not appreciating fine literature, how we are not willing to embrace it, how most of these trash come from Japan, how all these lousy books appeal to idiots like us, the mainstream, etc etc. Then he goes "I'm a writer, I should know." I almost broke out into giggles twice, not very appropriate of situation. But somehow, it all seemed so weird, this guy lecturing us on the kind of books we should read and what not, as if he was Jesus Christ himself preaching about the Bible or something as sacred as that.

Zhi cuts into his diatribe and announces that we are late. We run away. Kidding you, I am not. We ran, fleeing like dogs with tails between their legs.

I mean, really. What the hell?

I do appreciate the point of his lengthy lecture. Assuming that he is a damn good writer, of course it sucks if people get grossly credited for a piece of trash and HIM, ANAKIN SKYWALKER THE CHOSEN ONE IS SEVERLY UNDERAPPRECIATED. Also, he seems really passionate for literature and you do want people to appreciate the FINE ones. Of course, people really should read FINE literature, technically speaking.

But bloody hell, I'll read whatever I'll like to read. I hate people who dictate what kind of things I should do - read, eat, draw, listen, etc. I think it's pretty much close-minded. You don't force Picasso to convert to Romanticism or some crap like that because he thinks Cubism is good and you think it's meaningless, easily-made 'junk'. Like how he thinks most literature titles are easily-written, crappy content or whatever. You know. My life is damn bloody short, and I'll read junky crap if it makes me happy, because I don't want to spend that few years doing something which is pretty much miserable for me.

Speaking of junk, Junky's guestbook page has been fixed now Xianny.
