This morning in Almaty

The company furnished apartment is a large 15 story building with a very nice Japanese and a very nice Korean restuarant on the 1st floor, 3 floor of parking garages in the basement and privately owned apartments from floors 2 and above.

Our apartment on the 10th floor is oriented north- south and is as wide as the building which means we have great mountain breezes - now getting very cool - but great fresh cold air that can blow through the apartment.

The mountains are in the south - I think it is possible that some of the mountains in the background are Uzbekistan.

To the north are the great steppes of Central Asia - flat as a punctured tire with the ground compromising left over morraine (ground up rocks from the bottom of glaciers) and a few centimeters of top soil - not enough to support deep rooted vegetation.

Almaty is contrast and change. An old Silk Road city from Marco Polo days that has more Toyota land cruisers and Lexus Land cruisers per capita than any city in the world .... not to mention buggattis, ferraris, Lamborghini's etc.... some competition with Dubai I think.
