Title: Star-Crossed
Fandom: Eyeshield 21 / Darker Than Black

Disclaimer: Eyeshield 21 and Darker Than Black belongs to their respective creators.
Author's Note: I've toyed around with this idea for a while now, and finally decided that it's worth putting pen to paper. The concept of Contractors are taken from DtB, but I won't be cruel and leave everyone lost.

It was a night many remembered as a night of chaos. The starry sky suddenly disappeared, and in its place a foreign constellation appeared. They were stars, but no one knew where they came from. They gave light, but other that decorate the night sky, nobody really knew why they came to be.

The night the stars disappeared, a large portion of the city went along with it. The government declared an emergency and sanctioned off the area, building a huge wall around the place. They called it the Emergency Zone.

The locals called it Hell's Gate.

Many strange things happened after that. Howls and screams could be heard during the night and the residents living close to the EZ had to move out of terror. A 2 km buffer zone was enforced around the EZ - a place where there were no laws, no order. A zone that does not officially exist on the map and not recognized by anybody. Criminals began to gather, taking advantage of the fact that any crime committed within the buffer would not be judged.

Unknown to the public, the new stars did have a purpose. The astronomers discovered it; stars would suddenly give signs of activity during a strange occurrence, and after a short period of time reports came in - humans with strange powers that would cause certains stars to flare when used. Gradually the understanding that one unique individual corresponded to one star came about and these individuals became known as Contractors - because their powers came at a price each time it's used.

But no one knew how these Contractors obtain their powers, or why. On some nights, some stars would fall, signifying that their corresponding Contractors had perished. Sometimes a new star appeared - a new Contractor is born.

The year of 2046 was significant in that it was the year where the largest number of stars were born. Yet only a few were identified, and some were even sentenced to death for possessing powers so devastating that they posed a danger to the world.

A majority of these new Contractors escaped the eye of the government and lived in comfortable ignorance. For years all was well, the public was kept in the dark by the protective Government and nobody was the wiser. But then, the inevitable happened.

The stars collided.
