The Power of Music

Music is so amazing. I don't just say this as a composer and avid fan of all types of music, it's just every now and then music does something for me that makes me just stop and think...wow. What else in the world can do that?

I was driving home tonight after dropping my brother off at work, and as usual I was flipping through the radio stations trying to find something that I could sing along to. (I am a firm believer that there is no better place in the world to belt your lungs out than in the comfort of your own car with the music blaring and no one in it with you.) When I stumbled upon a song that I've never particularly liked, and haven't thought about in a really, really long time.

It was "How's it going to be" by Third-Eye Blind. As I said above, I don't really find this song to be very good, but, at the time it was popular it was played a lot so I just sorta picked up the words. You know how it is.

At any rate, it made me smile, and pretty well made my night by finding it. Why? Because it reminded me of a time that I rarely ever think about anymore, and that's when I was living in Fort St.John. So while I was driving, and singing along, I thought about old friends, a past love, and some good times I had while up there. And then it hit me. How cool was it, that by just listening to one song a flood memories came rushing to me? I dunno...it's just, really amazing to me.

What I find equally amazing, and really sad at the same time, is how easily I have forgotton my time up there. Though short (around 2 and a half years) there were certainly some significant moments, and a lot of people that shaped me into the person that I am today.

It's also one of those times where you wonder what you'd be doing now if you had actually stayed. How different your life would have been if you hadn't moved away. Friends you'd never know. Events that would have never happened, replaced by events that could have...I'm not one to dwell on it, but it's still neat to think about once in awhile.

All this because of just one song.
