Because Citan is still a fucking badass after all these years.

Yo folks.

So last night I restarted a game I haven't played in seven or so years. Xenogears. It's a game I hold very near and dear to my heart, even if I don't remember about 7/10ths of the thing. Which is why replaying it is a fantastic thing. It's a lot like when I played IX for the second time and fell in love with it.

I think the opening of the game up till about minute 45 might be some of the shittiest events to happen to a main character ever. Spoilers ahead if you worry about that sort of thing.

Poor Fei is all happy and shit, chillin' in his village. His best friend is marrying another of his close friends, this spicy little chick named Alice. Unfortunately for Fei, he has some unrequited love toward her, and she to him. But they're young, so it goes.

Anyway, the military suddenly starts a battle within the village, leading Fei's best friend to help evacuate while Fei recklessly commandeers a mech. Unfortunately, he loses his mind and kills everyone in the village including his best friend and love of his life. Lots of kids die, family etc. The only ones left were the children already evacuated, and the Doctor who lived on the hill above town with his wife. Dr. Citan.

Needless to say Fei isn't a very happy camper for a fair chunk of the first few hours. Can you blame him though? He directly killed hundreds of people including everyone he cared about. WOOPS.

In anycase, I'm five hours in and just ran into Bart finally. Oh Bart. You have a patch, and you're a pirate and you use a whip as your weapon. Fuck yeah.

I realized that what makes these golden age Square games so fucking brilliant are the characters. Xenogears is one of those games that grips you straight from the beginning with its strong characterization. It's also one of those few RPGs that don't start about saving world. They just sort of get there along the way.

It's in the little details, like Citan's final attack in his sick nasty combo being him flicking his finger at the enemy, making them fly to the ground. Or in the beautiful music by Chrono Trigger/Cross composer Mitsuda. Hell, this was the first Square game to feature VA, and it's not bad at all!

So yeah, five hours in and I'm remembering why I fell in love in the first place. Everything has held up so ridiculously well.

There goes a good 100 hours down the drain. -_-
