She was a bubbly young girl, adept in all things she could lay her hands on. He was attractive, a ball of hot air filled with immense talent. She wanted no less to be on the top of her class, while he settled for mediocrity. They were polar opposites, yet everyone supposed they were meant for each other. They on the other hand, think so otherwise.
He was an idol and she despises his lot. He doesn’t like boyish girls, she was one. But however they ignore the fact that they had chemistry, destiny had its own way of ensuring their roads meet halfway.
“Good morning Mirai!” Ryunosuke greeted her as she came to class early one day. The young boy had his black reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose, smiling widely at her.
“Oh, hi Miki-kun.” She responded, yawning a bit.
“Rough day?” he asked.
She shot her a suspecting glare which caught him off guard. She clutched her hands on his shoulders and wrung it as if trying to squeeze the blood out of his pores.
“What? What’s wrong with you?” he asked, his voice quivering.
“Do you know something?”
“What are you talking about? What thing?”
“O-kay… You don’t know a thing?”
“Dude, my shoulders…”
“Oh, sorry.”
“Gee, why so jumpy all of a sudden?”
“Nothing.” She replied.
“Suit yourself.” He shrugged, moving away from further affliction under Mirai’s hands.
“Suzu-chan!” she called out to her bestfriend.
Suzuka, who just came in, waved at her. “Hello Mirai.”
“Did you tell anyone about what I told you last night on the phone?”
“The thing about Ryos-”
“Shut it!” she glared.
She shook her head, laughing. “Nope. Why?”
“Miki-kun asked me if I had a rough day, and you know my day had been rough since yesterday.”
“Girl, your hair’s all messy. You look like you haven’t slept well since last night, which of course I know is true. And your uniform’s a bit untidy. It’s so unlike you. Maybe that’s why he asked you if you had a rough day.”
She checked herself a bit and swore. The things Suzuka said were true. She took her comb and tidied herself.
“Or maybe he’s just in love with you, that’s why he notices you too much.” She whispered.
“What was that?” Mirai asked.
“Oh nothing.” Suzuka chimed as she sashayed to her seat.
“Good morning class.” Their teacher called out as the remaining students arrived and were all seated. Just as the teacher was about to start her lecture, the door swung open and Ryosuke came in panting.
Mirai shuffled unsteadily on her chair as Suzuka and Ryunosuke eyed her suspiciously. The former did so because she actually knew what transpired the other day, while the latter was just plain in love with her.
“Yamada-kun, please go to your seat so we could begin the class.”
“Yes, sensei.” He moved in between chairs and swiftly took his seat behind Mirai’s.
Their lecture went on for almost an hour as their teacher’s voice droned on and on. They copied and answered the teacher’s questions. Mirai was at the top of her game. She was answering her questions left and right that at one time, Yuri uttered in annoyance that Mirai was being a showoff because Ryosuke was busy drooling over her. That made her quiet and blushing for a couple of minutes.
“Now, who could explain to the class how an electrical impulse is generated by the brain?”
Everyone fell silent. They all shifted their gazes to Mirai. They knew well enough that Mirai was the only one who could answer that question, since she was well versed in anatomy more than anyone else in class, even Yuri.
She stood up and started to answer. Halfway through her speech, she felt goose bumps on the back of her neck. Remembering Bugs Bunny’s infamous quote “Have you ever got the feelin’ you’re bein’ watched?”, she looked back, only to see Ryosuke’s deep brown eyes locked on her. His eyes weren't measuring her; it was more like he was carefully studying every part of her, familiarizing himself with how she does things. He smiled at her, a simple smile that made the walls she put up against him for as long as she knew crumble to dust with just that single movement of his lips.
Mirai turned her head back to their teacher and stammered on every word she said, not even getting the right answer. Everyone broke into muffled gossips with their seatmate, only to be hushed by their teacher as another hand shot up in the air.
“Yes, Yamada-kun?”
Ryosuke stood up. “Sensei, I would like to answer your question.”
There was a sudden collection of gasps. Their sensei had to shush them again. “Yes, Yamada-kun. Go ahead.”
Ryosuke spoke with confidence as he provided the correct answer to their teacher’s question, much to everyone’s surprise. Now, Ryosuke was not dumb nor was he a genius, but usually, he was a quiet lad in class. It was the first time he had the guts to answer a question from their teacher and coincidentally, to save Mirai from not being able to answer it.
“Good, Yamada-kun. Shida-chan, please sit down.” She politely said and went on with the lecture.
Once class was over, Suzuka went to Mirai's seat and nudged her.
“Hey, what’s with you?” she asked, grinning.
“How could… How could this happen?”
“How could Ryosuke answer that question while you stutter yourself to death? I don’t know, Mirai. I certainly do not know.”
“No, it’s not that…” she said in a monotonous tone that Suzuka started to doubt her sanity. “How could he have this effect on me?”
Suzuka rolled her eyes. “Here we go.”
She looked at her bestfriend intently. “I’m serious.”
“Oh. You are?”
She merely nodded.
“Hmmm… I don’t know Mirai. Maybe it’s the same thing that happens between me and Yuto.”
“That sort of thing? The thing with the cheesy lines and vomit-provoking things you say to each other?” she uttered in disbelief.
“Exactly.”
She looked at Suzuka, her eyes wide with incredulity and giddiness, a weird assortment of emotions to say the least.
“Hey, uhmm… can I have a word with you?” someone from behind Mirai asked.
“Sure.” Suzuka answered, leaving the vicinity with Yuto, their arms linked together.
“What?” Mirai asked.
“About yesterday…”
“Yesterday was an accident.”
“I don’t believe you.”
She was silent.
“I don’t believe that you are as thick as what you are trying to show me now. Yesterday was not an accident. And this feeling we share is not an accident either.”
“Share? Feelings?”
“I adore you, and I know you adore me too. Your words maybe deceitful, but your eyes and your lips told me the truth.”
There was a sudden screeching of the chair as Ryunosuke inadvertently bumped into it. He looked at the pair with incredulous eyes, as if he had just heard of a death sentence.
“Sorry.” He said. “I was just packing my things.”
“It’s okay.” Ryosuke smiled. He didn’t continue talking until Ryunosuke was out of sight. “Now, where were we?”
“You are so full of yourself!” she tried to sound enraged but her voice faltered to be like almost a squeak.
“Tell me why. Tell me why are you so intent on denying the fact that you share the same feelings that I feel?”
“I - I…”
“You only stutter when you’re nervous. And I know you wouldn’t be nervous about this talk if you don’t have feelings for me too.”
“Don’t be so arrogant.” she murmured.
“I’m not being arrogant. I’m just confident.”
“Did you know that overconfidence could lead to arrogance?” she spat.
“Yeah, I do. You taught me that. I had been arrogant before, but not now.”
“You are insufferable!”
“Quit insulting me or I’m going to kiss you one more time.”
“You dare!”
“Yes, I dare.”
“Yamada-kun, you are such a jerk!”
With one swift motion, Ryosuke’s lips held Mirai’s, which, if any teacher had seen, would have been a violation of the school’s rules and regulations.
Ryosuke broke the kiss with a satisfied smile on his face. “Now, tell me you don’t have feelings for me too.”
Mirai slowly opened her eyes and felt her leg swing back slowly to the floor. Without her feeling it, her leg has been raised up during their kiss. “You…”
“I love you.”
She took a deep breath. “I never despised you. I just don’t like idols. But you were always my epikia, my exception. I liked you before and I like you still. The problem with me was that I was afraid. I was afraid that I would eat up what I said before that I would never fall for an idol.”
“Well, you ate not just your words but my lips too.” He smirked.
“You arrogant prick!” she whacked him in the arm but it hadn’t been a violent act, it was more of like an affectionate whacking.
“Sorry.”
“Like I said, I was afraid.”
“Hmm… I can’t blame you. But at least now I know you like me too. And don’t be afraid now, you’ve got me.” He said, taking Mirai in a warm hug.
“This doesn’t mean we’re together yet.” She said.
“I know. I just would like to cherish this at the moment. We’ll take it slow, together.”
“Jerk.”
“You really want to kiss me that much?” he giggled.
She just rolled her eyes.
From behind the door, a heart bled, wept and was in agony. Tears fell from Ryunosuke’s eyes as he moved away from that place; a place that was heaven for two hearts, yet more than hell for his own.
