Tezuka woke up with a start. He looked at the clock and sighed. It was only 3:00 am and he was a wake and probably was not going back to sleep. This was the fourth time this week that he woken up like this and it was starting to worry him and affect him in school. Just yesterday he had nearly nodded off during a movie they were watching in history. He knew the cause of his trouble rest, this one damn dream.
It is the same dream and it was always disturbing. He is always alone at the start of it, walking down a long road. It was rather pleasant, with a couple of flowering trees lining it and grass and flowers. There are also benches and street lamps ever so often in case a person would want a rest or got scared at night. It almost reminded him of childhood, the way it was nice and safe, and fairly straight forward.
Then he would come to a bend and when he went around it he discovered the road had split in two. One path led into a dark forest and he could only see a couple feet ahead. Its path was lined with stones that were bumpy and cracked in some places and smooth and whole in others. The other was a desolate field, one that was straight forward, but dull and dry and he while he could not see to the end, but it was pretty clear where it was going. It was just a dry dirt path, nothing challenging about it nothing overly exciting.
Then as he stands there deciding with path to take a small body would appear from the woods, and a voice would call out him. For some reason he was always startled to see Echizen Ryoma standing there looking at him, dressed in his standard shorts shirt and white cap, with a tennis racket in his hand. He would call out to him, beckoning Tezuka to follow him, saying that they had a match to play in the U.S. open, and it was waiting for them, just the two of them.
Then just as Tezuka decided to follow Echizen, a man from the other path would appear, his father. His father would call out to him; tell him to forget that nonsense, that his shoulder would not last. He should give tennis, get a real job and settle down with a real family, not some man.
Tezuka would then be trapped there, unsure of which path to take. He wants to follow Echizen, play tennis, and be with him, but he knew that if he did he would lose the respect of his family. He also knew how cruel people could be to gays and he was not sure he wanted to deal with those issues. Of course if he did take that path he would have tennis, the respect of his friends, and Echizen. He knew that he did not want to follow his father’s path, but that would lead to respect of his family and a normal life. He would not have to deal with homophobia. He also understood that by taking this path he would lose the respect of his friends, tennis, and Echizen.
The paths did not intersect and he knew once he started on one of the paths he could not change his mind. He knew that time was running out and he had to decide soon, before the choose where taken away from him. Which one would he choice? He is not sure.
