The general consensus on my laptops backlight is:

As far as we can decipher without actually tearing it apart, or having in-depth knowledge of ATI's VPU's, the power inverter board for the backlight, which supplies its power, is having problems when it heats up. My guess is a fault Capacitor or something that decided to die out in coincidence with me getting OpenGL acceleration via hardware working under Linux.

By canoles and frijoles, Murphy loves me... he loves me so hard I scream bloody murder.

Good news is, if I decide to brave the repairs, I know where to order the power inverter board from. Which I would likely order along with a new keyboard and maybe... just maybe, a new battery or something.
