Nino and Ohno sat side by side in the Arashi green room with Ohno resting his head on Nino’s shoulder. The other three members had walked in and out of the room but nobody spared them a second glance as Nino was playing a video game and Ohno was watching. At first it had been an odd sight to see Ohno and Nino so close with so much skinship, but after a decade of being a Johnny’s with all of the fan service that they had to do and the close relationship between the two boys.
When Nino’s game had ended, he gently stroked Ohno’s hair with one of his hands and enjoyed the feeling of the weight of Ohno’s head on his shoulder. “Are we still grabbing dinner tonight?” Ohno asked, though his voice was muffled by Nino’s shirt.
“Of course, it’s our Friday night tradition.” Nino replied and watched as Ohno’s chest rose and fell with each breath that he took. He looked at Ohno’s eyes and saw how they were entranced by the dancing video game character on the screen that was almost mocking Nino, dancing after he had lost.
Nino had often found himself staring at the computer screen after he had lost in shock of the fact that he lost and also subtly amused by the dancing icons that illuminated the end screen, but instead, today he preferred looking at Ohno.
Ohno was oblivious to the look that Nino was giving him and said, “Since the game is over, are you ready to go?” Nino nodded and packed up his laptop and they set off for their favorite restaurant, a little family owned Chinese restaurant in walking distance from the Jimusho. Nino had discovered it one day and had later introduced Ohno to it. It soon became their restaurant and they made it routine to meet up at the end of their week there.
Aiba waved goodbye to them, knowing where they were heading. When they began this tradition, Aiba had initially asked if he could come along which Ohno happily agreed. Neither Aiba or Ohno knew Nino’s true intent of inviting Ohno, and only Ohno out to dinner, so when Aiba joined them, he was faced with the unpleasant reality of Nino’s glares throughout the meal.
People had said that Aiba was clueless, but when it came to Nino’s overt hostility, Aiba picked up on his not so subtle hints and that was the last time that he ever joined them on their Friday night dinners.
Jun passed the duo on the way out and hesitated. He knew what Ohno wanted to tell Nino over dinner and of course he knew Nino’s feelings. Almost everybody knew about Nino’s feelings except Ohno. “Hey Nino, can I borrow you for a second?” Ohno waved goodbye and promised Nino to wait outside for him.
“Nino, you’ve got to stop this.” Jun said and Nino heard the one thing that he had rarely heard seep into Jun’s voice: pity.
“Jun, it’s fine. We’re friends.”
“But that’s not what you want.” Jun said and Nino shrugged. It wasn’t what Nino wanted, but it was what he had long since told himself. “I don’t want to see you get hurt.”
“It’s fine, it’s not like Ohno has anybody, right?” Nino chuckled. He found himself in the same conversation that he had been having with Jun for years. Initially he had been taken aback by Jun’s bluntness, but he knew that Jun only had his best interests in mind.
“Yeah, I guess.” Jun closed his eyes and for a moment, it looked like his was pained, but then blinked.
“I better go since Ohno’s waiting.” Nino said and gave Jun a quick hug before he went to meet up with Ohno. Once outside, he roped an arm around Ohno’s shoulders and they headed off for the restaurant. The hostess seated them at a table far enough away from prying eyes since the first few times that they had come they were recognized.
After coming here for several years, they didn’t even have to order when their meals were placed in front of them. Nino always ordered the chicken lo mein while Ohno’s habitual order was the fried rice and they always split an order of egg rolls.
“So I’ve been seeing someone.” Ohno declared and Nino visibly gulped as he heard the words that he had been dreading to hear tumble from Ohno’s plump lips.
“Really? How are things going between you two?” Nino asked like every best friend should but inside his stomach was churning and he had begun to lose his appetite. Her name’s Hana, we met through Jun actually, and we’ve been going out for about three months.” Nino’s heart sank. Three months, that was pretty serious as far as relationships go in the Jimusho, and Jun, Jun knew about Ohno’s relationship. That explained his extra warning before Nino headed out.
“So it’s serious?” Nino asked feeling the growing lump swell up in his throat, almost choking him.
“Yeah, I think so. I mean I’m thinking of asking her to move in with me.” Nino blinked and began to feel tears sting his eyes.
“Wow, I’m a little surprised, but congratulations.” Nino mustered and lowered his head to look at his food. Ohno dominated the rest of the dinner conversation and Nino had to wonder why he was only learning about their relationship now. Oblivious as always, Ohno just continued to talk about his developing relationship and with each word, Nino felt more and more like crying.
Ohno waved goodbye to Nino after they had paid their check, and once Ohno was out of sight, Nino sprinted to the Jimusho and entered the dressing room where he collapsed in the privacy that the closed door offered and buried his head in his hands.
Jun had heard the door slam shut and entered, curious to see who had come in at such a late hour.
He opened the door and found Nino huddled in a little ball with his arms forming a protective barrier around his body. Nino looked up and Jun frowned when he saw tears trickling down the older man’s face. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Nino asked and Jun felt crushed knowing that Ohno must have told him.
“I wanted you to have a little bit longer to have that fantasy that you tried to maintain, that you were dating him, by going out to eat, letting him rest his head on your shoulders.”
Jun knelt down and let Nino bury his head into Jun’s shoulder.
“Why did I fall in love with a straight guy?” Nino asked rhetorically, and Jun had no answers to say in response, the only thing that he could do is comfort him while somewhere else, they both knew that Ohno was meeting up with Hana.
why did i have to fall in love with you
