After Kame was honest with Pi, their relationship improved. It took Kame a while but he slowly became comfortable with holding hands with Pi in public and kissing him when he came home. It was still weird for him to think of himself as “Pi’s boyfriend,” but they were getting along well and he was enjoying his time with Pi. They quickly got into a routine with Pi dropping Kame off at the KAT-TUN dressing room and waiting for him so that they could go home together.
About a month after their conversation about what Jin had said to Kame, KAT-TUN had wrapped up rehearsals for the day and Kame was waiting for Pi outside the dressing room after the others had all left and found it bizarre after he had waited for about 15 minutes. Usually Pi finished up first and was waiting for him but this time it was different, he went to Pi’s dressing room, but nobody was there. He wandered through the halls until he saw Ryo and asked him if he knew where Pi was.
Ryo’s brow furrowed and he asked Kame, “Nobody told you?” Kame felt his pulse quicken as he worried that something had happen to Pi. Had he fallen during practice? Was he sick? “What happened?” he asked anxiously.
“Pi left early after he got a phone call from his mom. I guess his childhood best friend died today. He didn’t look too good when he left.” Kame felt his heart sink after he heard what had happened. He couldn’t begin to imagine the pain Pi must be feeling right now after hearing the news. He thanked Ryo and hailed a taxi cab to take him back to the apartment.
When he arrived and unlocked the door he found the kitchen to be completely trashed, there were remnant of broken plates and cups on the ground and Kame cautiously stepped around them. “Pi,” he called out, but there was no answer. He entered Pi’s bedroom to find him huddled up with the sheets covering only his feet. As he got closer, he could see a gash on Pi’s hand, probably from one of the pieces of a broken plate and when Pi looked up at him. The look of desperation of Pi’s face took Kame’s breath away.
Seeing that Kame was there, Pi lost his composure and started to sob and Kame rushed to his side. He sat behind him on the bed and let Pi lean back against him. He gently stroked the other’s hair and felt his shoulders wrack with sobs. Kame was at a loss for what to do or say. If something, God forbid, ever happened to Ueda he would be inconsolable. After a little while, Kame went to the bathroom to get some sterile supplies and tried to clean up Pi’s wound. It didn’t look too deep, at least not enough for stitches so Kame disinfected the area and put a bandage over it.
After a while, Pi fell asleep and Kame began to clean up the mess in the kitchen, careful not to cut himself in the process and prepared a few aspirin for Pi for when he’d wake up. Kame cooked him porridge for dinner, since that was his favorite comfort food and waited for him to wake up.
When he finally did, although Kame wished that he had slept for a longer period of time, he looked like shit. He walked somberly throughout the rooms, sat down mechanically, and ate a few spoonfuls of the porridge that Kame had made before leaving again without even saying a word.
Kame sighed, and entered the bedroom where there was something new on the bed that he hadn’t seen before. It was a picture of a younger Pi, much younger than when Kame had first met him with a boy he had never seen before, probably the kid who had died.
“I just e-mailed him the other day,” Pi said with a ragged breath. “And now he’s dead.” Kame sat in front of him on the bed and held his hand.
“I’m so sorry,” Kame whispered into Pi’s hair as a new wave of sobs wracked his body. When it seemed like things were beginning to calm down, Kame thought it would be best if he went to sleep in his own room but Pi pulled him back onto the bed. “Please don’t leave me. Stay?” Seeing Pi’s pleading eyes, he lay down on the bed and Pi used his shoulders as a pillow.
That was their first night sleeping together. When Kame woke up the next morning, he gently pried himself out of Pi’s embrace and pulled out his handphone to call his manager and then Pi’s to let them know that they’d need a few days off. Kame’s manager was less than enthused considering the number of days that Kame had taken off after he had broken up with Jin but mumbled something about him catching up when he’d return to work. When Kame was done making the phone calls he went back to Pi’s bedroom and as quietly as he could lie down on the bed and Pi’s arms instinctively wrapped around him, and Kame knew that this was the exact place that he needed to be.
When Pi woke up he mumbled, “work,” but Kame had explained how he had arranged a few days off for them at least until the funeral. Pi blinked a few times realizing Kame was still there in his bed. “You’re still here.” He said stating the obvious and Kame nodded. He pulled Pi’s hand to help him out of bed. “Come on. I’m going to help cheer you up.” Kame said brightly and although Pi would normally want to go out with Kame, he was still reeling in shock of the news.
“I’m not really in the mood to go out.”
“I figured, that’s why we are staying here.” Kame quickly prepared a breakfast for the two of them before they hunkered down to watch a Disney movie marathon. Kame could tell that though Pi was no longer crying, he was still not his chipper self and Kame’s heart ached at the loss of his jovial smile on his face. As they were sitting on the couch and Pi was resting his head on Kame’s shoulder he looked up at him and turned off the television.
“What’s wrong?” Kame asked, unsure of the reason behind the sudden change in the mood. “I love you, and I don’t expect you to say it back to me” Pi said and Kame’s eyes widened. “but please, please never leave me.” Pi said and reiterated what he had said the day before, but Kame understood a greater meaning behind it. He was asking him to stay with him forever. Kame chose his words carefully, “I will always be by your side.” Kame promised and it was true, even if they didn’t work out romantically they would still be friends, or so he hoped.
Kame continued to occupy Pi’s time in the days that followed, eventually getting him outside. On the day of Pi’s friend’s funeral, they both traveled to Chiba in dark formal suits to pay their respects. The ride to Chiba was marked with silence as Pi spent the entire time staring out the window. The only sound heard was an occasional sniffle from Pi, but neither said a word. Kame had been able to temporarily divert Pi’s attention from the tragedy, but today he didn’t even bother to try.
At the funeral, they both bowed in respect and Pi felt tears prick his eyes when he saw the picture of his friend. Kame comforted him the best he could, but when Pi saw his mother in the crowd waiting to pay their respects he burst into sobs. Kame watched from a far as the mother and son embraced, both mourning in their own way the man who had passed. When they both regained composure, Pi waved Kame over to introduce him to his mother.
“I’m sorry that we had to meet under these circumstances, but it is a pleasure to meet you, Yamashita-san.” Kame greeted and bowed.
“The pleasure is mine Kamenashi-kun.” Pi’s mother said. They struck up small chatter and when Pi was called away by one of his other childhood friends, Pi’s mother started talking to him privately.
“Thank you for giving my son a chance; he’s loved you for a very long time.” Kame blushed and smiled. “and he will never hurt you.”
“I know.” Kame said as he watched Pi talking animatedly to a stranger.
“Thank you for supporting him in this difficult time.”
“What are friends for?” Kame said absentmindedly, but the minute the words escaped his mouth he regretted them, Pi’s mother winced, but Pi’s return marked the end of their conversation. After a few more hours Pi said goodbye to everyone and he returned home.
“Today was such a difficult day.” He sighed, feeling relief that he had gotten some closure.
“It will get better tomorrow,” Kame reassured remembering when his uncle died and the days afterwards.
Pi looked Kame straight in the eye and said, “Thanks for being here today, it meant the world to me.”
Kame smiled and replied, while stroking Pi’s cheek, “There’s no place where I’d rather be.” And for the first time in their relationship Kame leaned in and initiated the kiss gently cupping Pi’s face and kissing him tenderly on the way back.
