The a few days later when entering the Jimusho, the sight of Pi and Kame holding hands was enough to elicit not so quiet whispers from the Juniors. Feeling the stares of the others on his back, Kame wanted to pull his hand out of Pi’s grip, but he knew how much that gesture would hurt the other so he buried his feelings and smiled right along Pi although deep inside he was cringing. As they walked towards the KAT-TUN dressing room a crowd of Juniors gathered behind them to get a look at the new couple. Amongst the hullaballoo, there was one person who went unnoticed in the crowd of Juniors, that was until Ryo came by to help disperse the crowd.
Out of fear for their senpai, the Juniors went their own way, but there was one person who stayed behind and when Ryo’s eyes met his, a mixture of conflicting emotions swelled up in him. Ryo felt like he was being pulled in three different directions out of friendship and loyalty to Jin, Kame and Pi, but a part of him wanted to protect the fledgling couple and from the look in Jin’s eye, it seemed like he was the one that they needed to be protected from.
Ryo walked up to him and in passing clapped a hand on his shoulder. “I’m saying this because I’m your friend. You had your chance, let them have theirs.” Though his tone was warm, it was also cautionary and it was enough to get Jin out of the KAT-TUN hallway.
Pi told Kame a temporary goodbye and that he would see him after work for dinner. Kame felt relief when his hands broke apart from Pi’s grasp embarrassed by the sudden attention that he was getting, plus he wasn’t ready to share their relationship with others, but Pi had decided for them. Kame sighed. It was fine.
During their break for lunch, Kame was finishing a few things up alone in the dressing room when Jin entered and when Kame saw the look on his face, it was one of pure anger. “What the fuck are you doing with Pi?” He demanded. “It hasn’t been that long since our break up and already you’re jumping into bed with him. All this time you pretended that you were heartbroken but you were just getting sympathy.”
Kame felt tears well up at Jin’s words and before he realized what was happening his hand collided with Jin’s face. “Stop it. We are over and it shouldn’t matter to you who I’m dating.”
“You’re not dating him, you’re using him as a rebound. We both know that you still love me and to be honest you’re not helping any one with this arrangement, not him, not me, and definitely not you.
“Shut up. Shut up.” Kame screamed and the volume of his calls was enough to alert Ryo who was in the vicinity and heard Kame. He rushed into the room and grabbed Jin by the collar and pressed him against the wall. “Did you not hear me. Stay away.” He ordered and Jin left begrudgingly.
“Are you okay?” He asked Kame as the other wiped the tears away from his eyes. Kame nodded and drew in a ragged breath. “Please don’t tell anyone about this.” Ryo swore under his breath. In this whole affair he had lied to his friends, kept secrets from each other, and now Kame was asking him to do it again.
“Fine.” He answered and as the KAT-TUN members returned he gave a meaningful look to Tatsuya and left. When Tatsuya looked at Kame he noticed red circles around his eyes almost as if he’d been crying but he shoved that in the back of his mind.
When it came time for Pi to pick Kame up, he had regained his composure and smiled at him and Kame tried to repress the memory of Jin’s conversation, but maybe he was right. Maybe it was too early to start a relationship. Throughout the dinner conversation, Pi made animated chatter about work and the latest news that he saw, but Kame was absent from the conversation. Although he was quiet, Pi attributed it to a long day at work and filled in the empty silence.
When they headed back to their shared apartment Kame said goodnight, but before he could enter his room Pi reached out at grabbed his arm. When Kame turned back around, the look on Pi’s face was almost predatory and he leaned in to kiss him. Kame, stunned just stood there until he felt Pi’s lips press against his. “Goodnight,” Pi said and left Kame standing there, but before he entered his own room he turned around and as an afterthought said, “If something is bothering you, you can tell me.” After he saw Pi disappear he wondered if Pi did realize that he was distracted the entire time.
He lay in bed but was wracked with the decision of telling Pi about his conversation with Jin. For a few hours he went back and forth debating whether he should tell Pi and risk making him worry or deal with it on his own. There was one thing though, that he remembered Tatsuya saying long ago when he first got together with Jin, and for some reason, it stuck out in his mind, “Honesty is the foundation for any relationship.” During his relationship with Jin he had stuck by that mantra and it had worked out fine, until…. But what would happen if Pi found out from Ryo or Jin and didn’t hear it from him then he’d think that he was hiding something.
It wasn’t like Kame was in love with Pi, but still they were technically in a relationship so he should tell him, shouldn’t he? When Kame finally mustered the courage to tell Pi he opened his bedroom door and headed into Pi’s and turned the light on.
The sudden change of brightness caused Pi to wake up and mumbled, “What the fuck? What time is it?” He blurrily looked over at the alarm clock that read 2:37am. “I’ve only been asleep for two and a half hours.”
When he turned around he saw Kame just inside the bedroom door and he looked like he wanted to leave. He was wringing his hands in the manner that was so familiar to Pi when he was unsure about what he was going to say.
“What is it?” Pi asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“I talked with Jin today and he said that we rushed into things, and I think he’s right because I still have feelings for him and I don’t want to hurt you and I don’t want to get hurt, and maybe we moved too quickly.” The words gushed out of Kame’s mouth and Pi took a few seconds to process the information.
“So what do you want to do? Stop this?” Pi asked feeling an ache in his heart in fear that things would end between them before it even began.
“….no.” Kame said, much to his own surprise as well as Pi’s. “I don’t know what I should do?” Kame said.
“Give us a chance. We’ve only been together a week. I wouldn’t expect a complete stranger to have fallen in love with me in this time and I’m not expecting that of you either. I know you’re still in love with Jin, I’m not happy about it, but you guys were together for years, so that’s not going to change in a matter of months. You said it yourself, you don’t want to stop this so it’s not rushing things so let’s just prove Jin wrong.” Pi said. “Besides you’re liking it so far right?” And when Kame saw the look in Pi’s eye, it was one of sheer vulnerability.
“Most, but I don’t like the public affection.”
“What holding hands?” Pi asked confused when Kame nodded.
“It’s embarrassing.” Kame flushed and both he and Pi realized that the reason for which he felt shy wasn’t related to Jin, but instead to his general private nature.
“But I can get used to it.” Kame continued at Pi grinned at that. “I just wanted to let you know. I wanted to be honest with you so I told you.”
“Thank you,” Pi said genuinely and Kame nodded and awkwardly stepped out of the room finally able to sleep after telling Pi.
“I really love you, Kame” Pi murmured as he thought of Kame’s cute face as he told him what had happened. “I really, really love you.”
