I hate the free speech card. Freedom of speech means that the cops won't drag you out of bed and make you disappear/beat you/arrest you for saying what you believe. It does not mean you are immune from social ramifications to what you say. It doesn't protect, in many cases, your job. It certainly doesn't protect you from others disapproving of what you said or from being booted from a online forum for not following their guidelines.

OS had some severe Sam Carter hatred going on along with fellow fan hatred and lack of civility. Some of the things people said about Amanda Tapping were pretty scary too. It wasn't like that when I began hanging out there, but it was certainly that way when I left.

I had eventually stopped watching Stargate before it was over too around S7. I didn't feel the need to go to every message board, slamming the show and explaining why. If others were enjoying it still, good for them! I mean, lots of other people enjoy things I don't. I don't see the need to go around being a downer about it to those that do.

Actually the Carter/Tapping hate reminds me of something not on your list, the fan that has borderline (or not so borderline) misogynistic hatred for the leading female character. Much (though definitely not all) Sam Carter criticism was laced with it. I think I was burnt enough with OS that I've avoided really diving into another fandom, but I remember some spoiler sites for Castle and some of the comments aimed at Beckett are just. so. wrong.

What I've heard from members on my flist, there's some serious Buffy hate in quarters of that fandom which makes absolutely no sense to me.

I hope that the reason you don't have that in is that the Bones fandom has managed to escape that fan tendency, though I have me doubts... :(

I think Bones is a bit different in that respect, though I don't have a clue why. There's definitely a subset of fans who hate Brennan, but there's also a large and quite vocal group who watch only for her, and some who are quite proud of their 'girl crushes' on Emily Deschanel.

What several people noted I should have listed are the fights that break out between the Brennan camp and the Booth camp. There was a big crisis on Twitter about a week ago over that, with the Booth/DB fans screaming the show wouldn't exist without him (since he was the bigger name when the show began) and the Brennan/ED fans yelling that the show is actually about Brennan and, as originally conceived, wouldn't even have had Booth.

(True - the original concept would have had her working with different FBI agents and the focus much more on her than their relationship.)

Most of the fans I interact with watch for both of them, but we do have problems on the forum at times. There was a lot of hate directed at Emily for daring to get pregnant in the first place (actors have no business having a personal life if it interferes with a TV schedule, you know) and she was absolutely crucified for daring to take a full 12 weeks maternity leave.

Of course, the flip side of that are people criticizing the character of Brennan who is apparently only going to take 6 weeks. *face palm*

Absolutely agree on the free speech card. Too often it's used for bullying as much as anything else, and is frequently translated as '*I* get to say anything I want, but I will stifle you.'

And...exactly on the behavior post-show. I began losing interest in SG-1 toward the end of S4 (after being completely obsessed - to the point of attending cons in Canada and the UK). It was gradual for me, where I'd watch some eps and not others, and even through S10 I knew generally what was going on on the show because of friends, and I watched the last ep.

But it would never, in a million years, have occurred to me to go to fan sites and post hate about it.

That's one of the things I'm most baffled by, now. The Bones forum we call 'the toxic forum' is owned and run by a woman who has not actually watched the show in four years and hates everything about it. That's a lot of time and energy to devote to a television show.

I picked up bits and pieces of the Sam hate, but was never sure of where it came from. When I was still watching, there was a clear (and growing) divide between Jack/Sam shippers and non-shippers, but it hadn't spilled over to anti-Sam sentiment in particular.

I have a very low tolerance for actor-bashing in general, and toward AT in specific. A friend of mine was a friend of hers (as in stayed in one another's houses) and, well, that makes her too much of a human being to me. (I have a theory that a lot of fans don't see celebrities as actual people.)
