30 Days of Writing Thingy: Day 30

Best source of inspiration?

Last November my co-worker Sister Curly-Hair found out I was writing a novel for NaNo. She immediately pulled me aside and asked me the one question she always wanted to ask a "real writer:" Where do you get your ideas?

She did not like my answer: Life.

I couldn't explain it in a way that would make sense to both of us. But y'all understand, right? Life is the best inspiration.

I think Anne Lamott said it best in Bird by Bird when she said everything is compost. You live life, you see others living life, it all goes into your subconscious, mixes together, rots, and next thing you know the story seeds are flourishing.

This is why I don't believe in having regrets about my life. Sure, there are things I wish I'd done differently. But if I had made those changes, who knows where I'd be now? Maybe I'd be sitting at my desk after a long day at work and a longer drive home (@#$@## traffic jams!) with a cup of coffee and debating whether I want to work on my story inspired by Day 28's entry or say to hell with it and play Witcher 2 because I'm tired. Maybe I wouldn't. But there's one thing I do know: whichever way I spend the next couple of hours it will be with elves. (I side with the Scoia'tael every time I get a chance in the Witcher games. Down with the racist humans!)
