Well, the morning has started out just lovely with the circulation system here down with no timeframe for when it will be back up. For those who don't know anything about library circulation systems, this means that I cannot renew items, I cannot check in items, I cannot look up records for books or for patrons. I cannot issue new library cards, I cannot edit existing patron records. I cannot look up patrons by name for checkout, I cannot pay fines. I cannot do anything but check books out, and I have to limit people to five books per card. I can check out because we have a standby program which catches the numbers of patrons cards and book barcodes and saves them, then converts them to a readable format by the actual circulation system to load later. It gets cranky and loses digits with more than five books per card.
I'm getting mighty sick of having to explain to people that I cannot do what they are asking, and I do not know when I will be able to. I am the poor loser stuck on the desk, folks. I am not the one who's responsible for the problem or for fixing it and I only know what I've been told.
It's driving me nuts and I started out with a headache to begin with.
Can I go home yet?
EDIT: And a truck just ran into a power line down the street! We're on the emergency generator now! This morning just gets better and better.
