FourBillion.com -- Tell the United States Senate that you support High Speed Rail!

Oct 19, 2009 15:06

I'm back from the National Association of Railroad Passengers fall council meeting. And I have a very important homework assignment for everyone who still reads this.

ESPECIALLY* those of you who live in the following states -- but EVERYONE is encouraged to play, really!!
AL, CA, IA, IL, KS, MD, ME, MO, ND, NJ, OH, PA, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, WA, WI, or WV
Congress is currently debating the transportation appropriations budget for FY2010.

Six months ago the nation cheered as President Obama announced his $13-billion high-speed-rail initiative.

Today, a furious battle is shaping up between the two chambers in Congress: Should the President’s bold initiative become a continuing program, with funding included in the Fiscal Year 2010 budget?

The House of Representatives has embraced the President’s bold program. It appropriated $4 billion for high-speed rail in the 2010 budget. The Senate has suggested just $1.2 billion. The conference committee will meet this week to decide on the final amount.

The Midwest High Speed Rail Association, U.S. PIRG and Transportation for America have created a webpage where you can easily tell Congress that you want high-speed rail:

Please go to the site and take action!

If you'd like to read, in my own words, about the importance of High Speed Rail, I'll refer you to the LJ posts I wrote leading into last November's election: PART I · PART II · PART III

* The members of the conference committee are from these states. The conference committee will decide if the higher (better!) number proposed by the House, or the lower (terrible!) number proposed by the Senate, or some other number in-between (pheh!) will be in the final appropriation bill.
