I call it the Y.M.B.A., myself.

Greetings folks.

Another Saturday, another airing of This American Life from the Michigan Public Radio website, and another round of deep-cleaning the espresso machine and related parts down, and I find myself with only six hours left in my shift. Life is good. Moments of relative peace such as these allow me to reflect on things, and remember those who have helped me out in the past. It's a slightly long-ish list, including such fine people as my girlfriend, my parents, Herm Baker of Vertigo Music (whom you should give every spare penny you have, he's more than deserving of it). However, there is one organization that I owe a great debt to, and today I'm donating all of my tips to them.

The Young Men's Barista Association is a non-profit organization that collects money from donors to give out to young baristas (of both sexes, don't let the name fool you) who toil away practising their trade in abject poverty. The Young Men's Barista Association helps them purchase the finer things in life such as booze, cigarettes, thai food, and music that their meager incomes normally bar them from ever legally possessing. Every Thanksgiving, the Young Men's Barista Association even throws a potluck party at locally owned coffeeshops across the midwest, with a charity cake-walk afterwards raising much needed money for their yearly hair-care product hand-out for those 20-something bean-slingers. They also have weekly "Clientelle Banter" workshops (held every Tuesday at the UICA for G.R. area baristas) to help not only keep those witty remarks ironic, but sardonic as well. Please come on down to the 76 today and tip me well, Young Male Baristas and the Association thereof might thank you. I know I certainly will.

Ryan Van.

p.s. If you are reading this in yr friends page via the "Ryan Van" account please note that there is a new LJ community site to replace the much missed 75v76 site. it is calledthe 76. Please use this new forum at will.
