street scene day 1

Jul 30, 2005 16:06

the amount of room for people to maneuver around is a vast improvement from when street scene was held in the gaslamp. BUT - because everything is so spread out, it looked so sparse. maybe because the backdrop of the stadium is nothing in comparison to the storefronts of downtown.

despite being at street scene for over 5 hours - my friends and i only saw 3 bands - Rise Against, Garbage and The Killers. while standing in line to get our wristbands to get into the 21+ areas and then after we got in, we saw most of Rise Against. they were okay. i only knew 3 of their songs, which weren't bad. they did an acoustic version of "swing life away" that was very good. because it was all ages both days, there were gated off areas where alcohol was sold. we had a couple drinks and some jello shooters (strong but yummy) before heading out to the first stage.

we waited nearly 30 minutes past the scheduled start time for the Black Eyed Peas to start and finally gave up on waiting and headed to see Garbage. i heard they finally came on stage 15 minutes after we'd left, and the crowd was VERY unhappy for having to wait that long, and were booing and throwing stuff on the stage. my friends that waited to see them weren't happy with their performance either.

Garbage was excellent. the sound quality was pretty good and the band sounded great. they played a lot of the old favorites as well as stuff off the new album. it was a fun crowd - i really enjoyed them.

after Garbage was done, we trekked over to the other side of the stadium to watch the first few minutes of the White Stripes before heading back down the see The Killers. i guess because the Black Eyed Peas were so late coming on it pushed back the rest of the schedule, thus the White Stripes were late getting on stage. we waiting the 20 minutes we thought we'd get to see of WS, then gave up and headed down to see The Killers.

The Killers were great. the sound quality however, was not great. we were just as far back for The Killers as we had been for Garbage, but sound wasn't nearly as good as before, which was a bummer. they put on a good show, but my one compliant was that they didn't really work the crowd too much. the lead singer was jumping between the mic stand and his little keyboard/mic set up, so he didn't move around the stage very much. i was glad to see them since i missed them when they came to san diego earlier this year.

all in all, a fun night. i was bummed that i missed Hot Hot Heat - i heard they put on a good show. in between walking from The Black Eyed Peas and Garbage we passed by the time warner stage and heard some of Flogging Molly. they were too frantic for me - but the crowd looked like they were enjoying them. we also heard some of Social Distortion going up to see the White Stripes and on the way down to The Killers - they sounded awful. i don't know what it is about Mike Ness' voice - it just grates at me.

i'll write something on day 2 tomorrow - i need some sleep!
