Well, I gave it a week before doing anything completely overboard, but you had to know that it was coming. A tribute to the band that changed my life. Big words, I know, but they're deserved. The first band that I truly followed and could safely call my #1.
So, here's a little something to pay homage to a neato group of fellas! A video, a lengthy photo tribute and - unearthed from the dusty Ryan Gage box of Audioslave stuff - a hand written review from my first show in early 2003.
Audioslave performing 'Shadow on the Sun' live in Germany - my personal favorite song
It starts soft, builds, hits an incredible solo and then Tom goes absolutely nuts in the outro. I love it.
Audioslave

And, finally, with considerable embarrassment, here is the review that I wrote following my first Audioslave show...

Left to pick up Ian @ 5 and drove down to Kool Haus. Upon passing the venue, we were able to hear the band warming up in the car, even with the radio on. So, we got out and jumped in a line decked with vintage RATM & SG Ts to wait for over 2 hrs. While in line, I snuck around back to discover that a door was left open a crack. I stuck my head in to see Brad pounding away on the drums.
Once inside, Ian saved me a spot up front while I visited the Axis of Justice booth and bought a tour shirt. We waited an hour, as the crowd roared chants of "Slave! Slave! Slave!" a la the "Rage!" chants of the 90s.
Burning Brides came on and rock the house with bass driven songs. Finally, after much anticipation, Audioslave took the stage as the crowd went berserk and nearly crushed us in the front row. Rage & Audioslave have been my life forever. Understandably overcome by the emotion of coming within feet of my here, I fought back tears. I think Tom noticed and flashed me a smile.
Audioslave tore up the place with an unforgettable set
Highlights
- Chad Kroeger and Nickelback's bassist were in attendance. Chad sang along & knew many of the words.
- Two words - Chris and Tom
Chris was totally on the money. Incredible power and stamina. Joked with the crowd about the presence of weed and about hockey. He also thanked Canada for buying more Audioslave albums than any other country.
Tom was brilliant with insane solos and unbelievable intensity. Connected with the crowd - flashing peace signs, smiling at us (the more rowdy fans) and intense stares during solos.
- A new song! Killer guitar. May be a cover or unreleased song. Someone said it was Rush's Working Man
- The encore lead by a shirtless Cornell playing an acoustic "I am the Highway". Awesome!
The crowd was indescribable. Went nuts during Cochise that they nearly knocked all 6'5" 200 lbs of me over. Toronto, we sure showed how its done!
As for Ian, he's converted. Tom blew everyone away.
Thanks Tom, Chris, Brad & Time. That was the best night of my life. I have new appreciation for Chris. Tom far exceeded my dreams.
Did I mention he smiled @ me? Holy fucking hell, pinch me!
Alright. I'm done.
*sigh*
