Finally, I am a director.
At least, more of one than I used to be.
Earlier this month, I doubled my directing credit with another ten-minute play at UCR's "48" festival, and then, on the strength of the first one I did, I was asked to direct a longer one-act play. I jumped at the chance, naturally. Anyway, it's going wonderfully, in spite of the insane mishaps that plagued the show before we even had the first rehearsal (lead actor disappears, script is lost in a computer crash). It's a great play, and just on the strength of the text alone, I know I have a good show on my hands, and that feels great.
Then, there's "Kid-Simple" which will hopefully start rehearsals in May. It's the first established play I'll have directed since high-school (I refer to, for the two people that read this journal that were in that show, "The Actor's Nightmare." My grandma saw that show... she was very confused.) I'm really excited to do that show and I hope it actually happens, unlike other productions that totally got my hopes up (fuckin' "Wenceslas Square").
And other irons are in the fire. In March, I'm going to interview to totally sell-out and direct a production of "Damn Yankees." Those who know me know my general distaste for musical theater (save for a handful of exceptions), but I wouldn't be interviewing if A: I weren't confident that I could make it a good play and a good production regardless of the genre and B: they weren't paying a good deal of money for me to direct it. That'd go up in August and September.
Also, the Chance Theater has me on file to work on their new play workshops later this year. I talk to their Artistic Director pretty regularly over e-mail and he wants to come check out a show of mine. "Kid-Simple" seems to be the one he wants to check out. So I'd better make that good.
I need to stay busy. I want to try and maybe do "The Long Christmas Ride Home" in Orange County for the holiday season. Eventually, after spending this year proving myself with a diverse collection of shows, I'd love to start working with Rogue Artists or similar groups and start doing more challenging theater. I've got some books I'd love to adapt and direct that'd make for crazy productions. I'm going to try and get an internship somewhere next summer. And of course, I'm still writing.
I'm so busy... on paper, anyway. I'm considering taking classes at Second City when I move back to the OC. That's something I've also been mulling over. We'll see, I s'pose.
Oh, and my computer works again after 8 months of being exploded. I have Ben and David to thank for the very Frankensteinian resurrection that has taken place. Now it is bigger... faster... stronger! And I can talk on AIM again!
