I had a long rambling thought up yesterday, but I forgot it. Curse thee, mind! D: Buuut thankfully I remembered it today. So, for a long-winded spiel..

My mom's comment unnerved me slightly. "There they are in New Orleans, and they've spent how much to renovate the Superdome of damages? Why didn't they spend that on houses?" That may seem like a prudent idea; spend the money, rebuild the damaged homes, and people will move back in, right?

Noooot necessarily. Think about it a little. Entertainment, throughout history, has had a major effect on the populace as a whole. The Arena in Rome, Theaters in Victorian England, and even today in the form of sports teams, TV, movie stars, etc. It distracts them from the problems of the day, week, month, and year, and makes them content or even happy for a short while. A happy populace is one that isn't too likely to criticize the government's implementation of ideas harshly, so this could possibly be seen as a little distraction for the Mayor of New Orleans, to draw the wool over the common person's eyes and placate them for a good while. Who would want to return to New Orleans if only their houses were returned, but not the spirit of community? Not nearly as many as those who would return to a united New Orleans, to return to their previous life. Aaaaaand I better stop there, since my mind is threatening to drift off to that strange song from the flash "There she is!". e.e'
