Costuming

Okay, all my creative, crafty, role-playing friends, the Ren Faire here opens next month, and I've started thinking about what Justin and I are going to wear.  Since, you know, it makes for a really great diversion from wedding preparations.  And because I like doing stuff like that.

Now, we're not worried about historical accuracy.  At all.  I'm thinking about comfort and ease of assembly.  I'm not the greatest seamstress.  I can follow a pattern if I've got one, but because patterns are expensive, I'm playing with the idea of not using them on this project.

So this is what I'm thinking.

For me, I'm going to make something similar to the top in this photo.

It's easy enough, just three tubes with elastic on them.  I'm thinking of adding either a second span of elastic under the bust or a drawstring, just to pull it in a little tighter and making the silhouette a little more trim.  I have a bodice that might wear over top of it, but if I can find a fabric with enough body, then I might just leave it at that.

On the bottom, I'm going to make a circle skirt.  I want it to have a lot of body, and I've found several websites with directions, but I'm really confused.  Why I do have three semi-circles?  How do I take three halves to make a whole?  Rhonda, please help!

For Justin, I'm going to make him some wrap around pants.  They look super-easy and super-comfortable, so I'll probably make a pair for myself, too, just for the fun of it!  And then he'll either wear the tunic we already have for him, or I'll have to make him one--something more lightweight.  I'm thinking of making a really basic, is it a jerkin?  Basically a piece of fabric, folded over, with a hole for his head, and a belt tied around the middle.

And that's where I'm at.  Do any of you have any really easy ideas that I could use?  And any recommendations on what I'm already planning to do?
