“Let’s make a deal, Chinen-kun”, said Haruna with suspicious smirk curved on her lips.
“What deal?” Chinen raise his right eyebrow.
“I’ll give you Nakajima Yuto and all you have to do is make sure he stays away from Yamada-kun, by ALL MEANS”, Haruna emphasized the last sentences.
“Uh-huh. So how exactly you’ll give Nakajima-kun to me?” he asked with sarcasm tone.
“I already started my plan”, she grins.
“What kind of plan?”
“The Valentine’s Day competition. I paid the organizer to nominate only Yamada-kun and Nakajima”, she said proudly. Proud of the power she can buy from money.
“Is that what you call a plan? Are you kidding me? What if Nakajima-kun got a lot of votes? Maybe you didn’t realize it but he changed so much these passed few months! Don’t you think there are lot of girls start to look at him differently?!” Chinen raise his voice. He doesn’t like Haruna’s plan at all and it just make him more worried. He’s been watching that guy who’s sitting in front of him all the time. He noticed the girl classmates always peeking at him every time he was talking with Ryosuke because he has this mesmerized smile that he shows only in front of Ryosuke and Chinen hate that fact.
“You think I’m a fool? I know what I’m doing you idiot! I’ll make sure no one vote for him so Yamada-kun will win and the girl who will have a date with him? Is me. Think about it, I’ll take Yamada-kun away from him for one day and you’ll have Nakajima all by yourself”, Haruna step forward and move her lips closer to Chinen’s ear.
“I’ll tell you where those two always hang out together…with his cat…in this school~” she whispered and Chinen have to admit that she got his attention.
“Nakajima-kun’s cat? In this school?” he wonders as he remembered that Yuto once said his cat at his cousin’s place.
“He’s been keeping his cat at this school and Yamada-kun is the only one who knows about it.” Haruna is making a naughty expression, trying to provoke him.
Chinen stunned. That means…those two was lying to him? He clenches his fist as anger burn inside him. He feels like a stupid letting them deceived him. Haruna smirk as this kind of reaction is what she wanted.
“You know that Nakajima loves his cat very much, right? So bribe him using that cat and he will treat you like how he treated Yamada-kun”, she suggested.
Chinen agreed that she got a point. He pretty sure that Ryosuke also did the same thing before to get close to Yuto. The school’s bell ring signaling the lunch hour already ended and students start flooding the school yard. One by one, the student open up the door and the shoe lockers area fill with noisy chatter. Behind the transparent glass door, Chinen could see Yuto and Ryosuke are walking side by side with bright smile on their lips and then the smile turn into laugh. Both of them look so happy…so intimate…and…so irritating.
“Fine, I’ll take it!” he decides. Haruna’s evil grin becomes wider.
“It’s a deal then” with that she walk away with full of satisfaction.
Chinen quickly take back the chocolate from Yuto’s locker and put inside his pocket before Yuto see it. Somehow, he feels that this is not the correct time to makes any move. Haruna and he already have a plan that he decided to agree on it. However, he doesn’t aware that his decision is going to be the biggest mistake in his entire life…

Ryosuke can hardly walk with him carrying the blue dustbin which almost half of his height and heading toward the school dumping area. He let out a long sigh after he put down the heavy dustbin and start transferring the garbage into the green colored waste container. Not far from him, there group of girls also doing the same thing while chattering and it seem that they didn’t notice him there or else it will be a chaos especially when he is one of the candidates for that stupid competition. Thanks to that, his whole day ruin by his bad mood and worries.
“What if Yuto-kun got higher votes and go date with a girl?”
“What if they end up going out for real?”
“How am I supposed to handle that?”
These questions keep playing in his mind for every second but at the same time he feels relief to have high popularity in this school. That means the chances of him to get higher vote is more possible than Yuto. He prefer being drag by some girl to who-care-wherever-it-is and go through pain in the ass all day long rather than letting Yuto hang out with another girl. But there is something wrong with Yuto today. He seems so down and now that he remembered, everyone in the class looks Yuto strangely.
He is about to go back to the class when he heard Yuto’s name being mentioned between the conversation of those girls.
“Aah~ I really hope my name get pick up from the lucky draw. I wanna date with Yamada-kun~” said long haired girl, cupping her own cheeks.
“Yeah, dream on. I’m the one who’ll get that date!” said another girl.
“Sou da ne~ I also hope I got the date with Nakajima-kun~” said the shorter girl.
“What?!” Everyone look at the short girl at the same time, surprised by her words.
“Are you crazy?!”
“I bet you are the only stupid girl who voted him!”
“Why~ lately he looks so cool like he changed into a total different person”, said that cute short girl innocently.

“The rumor…”
“What rumor?”
“About he…killed his own parents?”
Ryosuke’s eyes wide open in shock. “What…what the hell are they talking about? It…it can’t be true…”
“It can’t be true! I thought his parents died in a car accident!” said the short girl tries to defense.
“Yeah, true but do you know what exactly happened?”
Ryosuke quietly hide behind the waste container, intend to hear the rest of the conversation.
“His dad is whacked. He always borrowed money from loan sharks and when he can’t pay them back, Nakajima and his mom became the victims. I was in the same classroom with him when we were in the middle school. He seldom comes to school and when he did, he came with bruises and cuts all over his body. The loan sharks people abused him. They even came to school!” she shivering when she remembered back those days. It was quite terrifying.
“But that, just an old story everyone who were in the same school knows that. But the rumor that I heard recently is all connected with the past.”
“What is it? How?” the short girl become anxious and so does Ryosuke. His heart is pounding so fast now.
“According to police record, the accident was not actually an accident. It was sabotage! Someone cut the breaks!”
“So? What it got to do with Nakajima-kun?”
“Oh, gosh! Why are you so dump? It’s him! Nakajima is the one who cut the breaks!”
Ryosuke close his trembling mouth with both hands. What she just said was so shocking until his body shivers terribly but he pull himself together and continue eavesdropping even though he fear of what he will heard.
“W-w-what are you talking about!”
“The car crash happened right after his parents left their house. Who could ever done that if it’s not someone from that house itself?”
“Think about it. Because of his dad, his mom and he suffered a lot so he wants to put an end to it. But it’s a shame because his dad dragged his mom along to the town on that day and dragged her died together!”
“No…that’s not true! Yuto-kun will never do something like that!” Ryosuke cupping his both ears and shake his head. He can’t believe what he just heard.
“U-uso deshou? That just a rumor! No one believes that!” the short girl also can’t bring herself to believe what they are saying about her crush.
“Really? Why do you think Nakajima is what he was before? Lifeless, emotionless, never speak with anyone? It was all because he lives with regret!”
Ryosuke run as fast as he could. He can’t afford to hear all these nonsense anymore. He feel guilty as part of him say don’t believe and the other part of him say it could be true. “Who’s the one who started this rumor? Why?” Something comes in his mind and he stops running. Everything is clear now. Why they suddenly chose Yuto for that stupid competition, why only two of them nominated and why they spread this rumors. All of this is just to humiliate Yuto, all of this is just another part of their bully. “Why can’t they just leave him alone?!” e clenches his fists as anger rush through every each of his veins.
He walks toward his classroom in rush. He wants to see Yuto immediately as he worried he might have heard the rumor and feel distress about it. But it seems the rumor already spread in entire school. Along the corridor, all he can hear people are talking, whispering, cursing about that poor guy. He slides the classroom’s door roughly but he welcomed by loud pop sound and confetti are flying everywhere.
“Omedetou!!”
“Omedetou, Yamada-kun! You are the most wanted boyfriend of this year!!” The class fills with hands clapping sound. However Ryosuke doesn’t feel a bit of surprise, he knows this will coming.
All his classmates are cheering for him but he doesn’t give a damn about that shit and let himself out from the crowd. His eyes are scanning for Yuto’s figure but it seems that he is not in the class and leaves him in disappointment. He thinks that maybe Yuto at their usual place so he turns to walk out from the class but Haruna blocks his way.
“Yamada-kun, I will be your date for one day. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu~” she bow before him and Ryosuke just look at her uninterested.
“Ah...sou” with that he walk pass Haruna and run out from the class. She watches him from the corner of her eyes with annoyed look. The way he responded with I-don’t-give-a-damn on his face really hurt her pride but her lips slowly turn into smirk. “Run as far as you can but soon… you’ll be mine…”
Ryosuke is panting in front Yuto catching up his breath after running all the way from classroom until here. He’s right Yuto is here with Kyo-chan.
“Yu-“, Ryosuke stops his word as he saw pain in Yuto’s eyes. He must have been hurt because of that rumor. Of course he does, they made his scars bleed again and who wouldn’t feel upset if people accused them doing horrible things to their own parents? Ryosuke feel useless as he doesn’t know how to comfort him. He scared if he might say something unnecessary and make thing worst. He sits on his knees beside him and caresses Kyo-chan which on Yuto’s lap. Sometime their finger touches when they petting Kyo-chan but Yuto never flinch an inch. He keeps staring at front, deep into nowhere.
“Did you win? Who’s the lucky girl?” Yuto finally broke the silence.
“K-kawaguchi-san…” Ryosuke answered. “So he already knows about it…”
“Do you believe it? The things they said about me?”
“No! Of course not! You wouldn’t do something like that!” he said while gripping on Yuto’s shoulder, trying to convince him.
“Really?” Yuto asked while looking down to Kyo-chan who’s purring on his lap.
“Yes! I only believe in you, Yuto-kun”, he said honestly.
“What if it’s true?” Yuto turn his gaze toward him and his cold eyes meet Ryosuke’s wide eyes. He stretches his hand and slowly touches Ryosuke’s cheek. Then he moves his face closer to him.
“Will you still believe me?”
Ryosuke freezes. His brain suddenly stops working and he can’t digest Yuto’s words. He can’t read Yuto’s inexpressive face even though he knows him for quite some time. He tries to find the truth beyond that eyes but he lost instead. Yuto’s eyes forcing him to think that what he said is true. It’s like the words “what if” doesn’t exist in that sentence. What he believes Yuto is not that kind of person but to hear something like that coming out from Yuto himself feels like he stomps on his belief. Ryosuke’s hand is trembling and Yuto can feel it on his shoulder. He’s suffocating…and…frightened.
“I-I have…to go back…to class.” His shaking hand release itself from Yuto’s shoulder. He tries hard to stand on his weak legs and without turning back, he walk away lifelessly.
Yuto watch Ryosuke’s back getting smaller but before the figure completely gone he avert his eyes down to Kyo-chan. He rubs Kyo-chan’s chin making the cat lift its head up with eyes closed enjoying its master petting. But Yuto suddenly stop rubbing and Kyo-chan open its eyes, looking straight to Yuto.
“I thought…he’s different…” he said softly.
“But I guess I was wrong, Kyo-chan…”
“I was…wrong…”
“Nyaa~” Kyo-chan lick Yuto’s fingers as if it want to comfort him, as if it wanted to tell him ‘at least you still have me’ and Yuto smile as if he understand…
