Vulcan

While in Birmingham this weekend, my buddy Jason took me to see the Vulcan statue (www.vulcanpark.org). The Vulcan statue sits atop one of the highest points in Birmingham. At a height of 56 feet, Vulcan is the largest cast iron statue in the world, the second-largest statue in the US (behind the Statue of Liberty), and the largest statue ever created in the US. He stands atop a 124-foot pedestal, upon which is a catwalk that provides a spectacular 360-degree view of the area. Vulcan weighs 101,200 pounds and was cast entirely from Birmingham iron from Red Mountain in Birmingham foundries. His pedestal is made from Birmingham sandstone quarried from the site of the present-day Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The view from the catwalk on Saturday evening was beautiful... especially the burn-off from the steel mills in the distance.

Since my mind is always in the gutter, I couldn't help but think that Vulcan was one hot, bearded Muscle Daddy, to whom I should probably show deference. (After all, he is my elder and has a bigger "spear".) But, the fact that his ass is half-bare (I'm a the ass is half-bare kinda guy), kinda made me want to bend him over anyway.

pups, travel
