Long ago, when his father was stationed in Egypt, Greg and his mother had gone on a trip to Turkey. For the culture, she’d said, and he’d thought, no, for the language. It was different than the Arabic he’d picked up in Egypt, the vowels all sounding alike, but it didn’t take him long to work it out. Word order was different too, but by the third week in the city, he’d learned enough to roughly barter in the market.
He remembered that when Stacy brought the kitten home and spoke to it in its native tongue, ignoring Stacy’s grin.
