Jacob was very fussy yesterday so I wrapped him up in a blanket and took him outside for a while. He LOVES being outside and he slept for a little while.
I talked with the neighbors for a bit and realized that I still haven't taken down my "Vote for Issue 9" sign. Issue 9 was a 7.83 mills levy for the Keystone Schools. The neighbors and I all expressed our disapointment on how it failed and were surprised how many of the parents of the students that attend Keystone Schools voted it down.
I'm not surprised it failed, it was a huge chunk of change to ask. My house payment would have gone up $35 a month, which is a tank of gas. However, talking about the levy we had found out that the reason that parents voted against the levy was to force the school system to close down the two elementary schools when the new high school opens this fall. So now the elementary kids will be moved into the middle school built in 1892 and last renovated in 1949 and the middle schoolers move to the old high school.
I have a feeling the same parents that voted down the levy or didn't vote at all will be the first parents to complain about the lack of bussing, lack of playground equipment, and the overall low quality facility that the middle school really is. Not to mention the old high school still makes the hallways an obstacle course with the garbage cans colleting rain water. Since there won't be bussing for a two-mile radius (which I don't honestly care) the entire Village of LaGrange will not see any bussing for any grade whatsoever.
Yet these parents that voted it down can't afford the taxes on their 8 acres of land or their 3,000 sq. ft. home, because they wanted to build that pool, deck, or shed.
I may not have a kid in school yet, but I know how important it is to invest in things in the community. LaGrange is beginning to boom with Durham Ridge, Pheasant Run expanding, and now we're seeing developments off of Whitehead Rd. The whole point of the new high school was to let the old high school and middle school be used together and move one grade out of each elementary school to the middle school. So now we are right back to where we were before. Honestly, what was the point of passing the bond to build the new school if you're going to close other ones in the process?
Keystone will now become the district that spends the second lowest per pupil in the county and third lowest in north eastern Ohio. Thanks LaGrange!
