Ginny peered over the top of her novel to see a smiling Hermione, sitting across the library. She
set the book down then got up quietly to walk over to her friend. At Ginny’s hello, Hermione simply mumbled an “mmhm”,
without even glancing up.
“Right,” Ginny said curiously. “I was just wondering when you’d like to head down for supper. It’s getting rather late.”
”Sounds good.” Hermione replied, dreamily.
”What? What are you talking about? Don’t go turning into Lovegood on me, what are you-“Ginny pulled Hermione’s notebook
out of her hands. “Ooooh, I see.” Ginny let out a giggle. “You fancy Ron, eh?”
“SHHH!!!” Hermione gasped frantically. “Don’t go advertising it to the world! And yes, as a matter of fact. If you have to
know so badly, I do.”
“Aww, you’d be a great couple…if my brother weren’t so pigheaded.”
”He is not pigheaded!”
”Well, he hasn’t asked you out yet, has he?” In reply to Hermione’s quiet no, Ginny added “I think you should give him
something. It is Valentine’s Day coming up, make it worth while. Anonymous if you want. Besides, it’d make it all the more
Romantic.”
Hermione grinned.

She fell back on her bed and let out a heavy sigh. What a stupid holiday, Hermione thought. She had never imagined
anything special would happen to her on Valentine’s Day. How could it start now? Sure, she had always dreamed. And
wished. But this was just getting her hopes up. Ronald wasn’t like that. He would laugh at her if she made an attempt at
flirting with him. And a valentine’s gift would be simply out of the question - Anonymous or not. Of course, she did really
want to see what his reaction would be. Maybe he would like it? ...No. Face it, he doesn’t want to be with me, she
thought, and then turned over on her stomach, with a sinking head and a sinking heart.

There she is. He thought, as he walked through the halls. His footsteps were moving him closer and closer, her giggles
drawing nearer to his ears. As he came within a few feet of her, he opened his mouth, but nothing came out. Ron’s eyes fell
to the floor as he continued to walk on, failing to acknowledge her existence. You arse! He thought to himself, as a scowl
appeared on his face. Hermione was thinking the exact same thing to herself.

“Do you think she fancies me Harry?” Ron said, as he paced back and fourth in the common room in front of the fire.
“Dunno mate. Why don’t you just ask her out?” He replied.
“Are you mental?!?” Ron flung himself into the chair next to his best friend. “You can’t just do that! For Merlin’s sake! And I
thought I was the one with the problems.”
Harry just scoffed at this remark.
Ron mumbled to himself about gifts and how everyone else had a girlfriend. He cursed under his breath and then said, “I
just thought Valentine’s might finally mean romance for me. That maybe this year would be different.”
“Then do something about it!” Harry advised his friend. “Well, how about a gift?” Ron turned his head to object, but then
had a brilliant idea.
“If she didn’t know it was from me…”
Within the next few days, Valentine’s quickly approaching; neither Ron nor Hermione spoke to each other, for their self-
consciousness was far too heavily weighing on themselves. However, they both had Valentine’s plans formulating in their
minds.

Her hand flew over the parchment in perfect loops. “Come to the clock tower at Midnight Valentine’s Eve if you ever want
to know who I am. And…I have something for you.” Hermione was shocked that she had just written that. It was completely
unlike her. Then again, this entire thing was unlike her. Shrugging it off with her heart thumping loud enough she swore the
man on the moon could hear it, she signed it ‘anonymous’ and set it next to the beautifully wrapped parcel.
“Perfect.” Hermione was sure that this Valentine’s Day would be the one. The time that it actually meant romance for her,
and not just bloody sweets from “just friends”, but something more. Ronald was sure to like it.
Ginny came into the common room as Hermione stood up from the desk she had been writing at.
“Oh, a package. Could it be for moi?”
Hermione laughed. “No! Of course not. It’s for…” and with a huge lustful sigh she continued, “…Ron.”
“I knew you could do it.” She told her friend. “So…what’s on the parchment?”
“Well it’s to tell him to…” She trailed off, her attention being brought to a first year climbing through the portrait hole
and walking towards them.
“Ms. Hermione Granger?” the boy asked.
“Not last time I checked. You might want to ask my friend, though.” Ginny replied. The boy set a folded piece of
parchment on the table, then turned quickly, his cheeks turning deep scarlet.
“Wait!” Hermione said. “Could you please take this down to the great hall and give it to Ronald Weasley. He’s the red
head with the kid with the glasses.”
“Harry…Potter!?” The first year’s face brightened with a smile. He hugged the parchment Hermione had given him to his
chest and mumbled, “This is for Harry Potter’s friend,” as he walked back out of the common room.
“Star stricken?” Hermione asked with a laugh then continued, “So, anyways, what I was saying…”
“Yes! Come on, now. Tell me what you wrote!”
“I told him to…” Hermione paused as she fumbled to open her letter. “Meet me at…” She scanned the parchment that had
once been folded and closed with a seal. “The clock tower?!?”
“Well, I dunno. You wrote it!”
“No! Well, yes.” She said, her eyes frantically scanning the page. Then setting it down she sighed, “I told him, anonymously
of course, to meet me at the clock tower, at midnight the night before Valentine’s day…which is tonight.” Ginny looked
confused.
“And?”
“And it’s this note that boy gave me. Apparently stargazing with my advanced astronomy class has spontaneously changed
meeting nights, and it says to meet at the clock tower tonight…at 12:00.” Ginny’s eyes widened. Nodding her head
Hermione groaned. “Why? Why did I just give that boy a note to Ron asking him to meet me at the tower? I’ll never be able
to give him a gift while all the while hoping someone from class has decided to turn the corner and see me. I’ll already be a
nervous wreck as it is…”
Thoughts ran through Ginny’s mind. She knew she would have to convince her.

Hermione could hear heart racing. Her stomach seemed to be coming up through her mouth. Her hands were shaking enough
that she could easily drop the package she had brought for Ron. Her steps slowed as she arrived where she least wanted to
be at the moment, and she leaned back against the wall. After twiddling her thumbs nervously a couple hundred times, she
could hear footsteps coming up behind her. He’s early? We must have at least 5 more minutes. After the quick realization
that she had to see him sometime she knew she would have to turn around. Deep breath, she thought. You can do it. Then
Hermione swallowed hard and turned slowly. A freckled boy came from around the corner, with a flash of red hair. He
walked slowly up beside her.
“Oh…hi.” Hermione said self-consciously.
“’Mione. Erm, what are you doing here?”
Hermione glanced down to the ground. “Uh…Astronomy.” She said quickly. Stupid! She thought with an immediate sink in
her heart. She let out a loud sigh.
“What’s wrong?” Ron asked, avoiding eye contact.
Hermione bit her lip. “I, I…” She couldn’t form the words in her mouth. When she looked back up, she locked eyes with
Ron. She felt a sudden rush of courage. “I came down here to meet you because I was the one that sent that letter.” She
blurted out at twice the speed than she normally talked, then impulsively glanced to the ground.
Ron’s eyes widened a little. He quietly said “Oh...” hardly keeping a large grin off his face.
Hermione felt horribly awkward and let out a wince, keeping her eyes everywhere other than Ron. He thought he would
take a stand.
“Here, Hermione.” He said, holding out a simply wrapped parcel. “Well…See, I...I actually kind of hoped you were the one.
I, uh, got you this.” Hermione looked up and smiled as she took it.
“Oh, really?” She asked biting her lip. “Well, erm, here.” She added, handing him his package. After looking at it for a
couple of seconds she questioned, “kind of hoped?”
“Yea.” Ron smiled at her. “I, well, actually…I’ve thought so for awhile now.”
Hermione wasn’t sure what she was doing. She just hoped it was right. “Me too.” She said.
“So…” Hermione said after a few seconds of silence “Maybe we should wait to open them until it’s actually Valentine’s
Day?”
Ron nodded. “That sounds great.” He said. “Yes-“ he added, only to be cut off by the chimes of midnight.
As they finished, Hermione said, “Astronomy. I still have to go. I can’t be late.” After a couple steps, she turned back
towards Ron. “See you tomorrow?” She said.
Ron grabbed her arm as she tried to turn away again. “Wait, ‘Mione! That letter…it was from me. I wrote it to get you
down here so I could give you this. Great minds think alike, I guess.” He said with a laugh.
Hermione smiled. “Then I don’t have to leave.” She walked back over near him. “So, it is technically Valentine’s Day now.
We could open them now if you like.” Hermione glanced away, with a nervous feeling in her stomach.
”Well…” Ron said. “Yes. But…I have something else I’d like to give you first.” Hermione looked up only fast enough to grin,
as Ron leaned in and gave her a kiss.
