Introducing Becca's PV Corner!

Jul 21, 2008 19:49

I was inspired by my sister Sara's comment abut posting the Koda Kumi/Fergie video on my last post with the KAT-TUN and DOUBLE/Amuro PVs (ha ha, lucky you - I'm totally posting it), as well as a conversation with disorder_circle about random PVs I was going through on my computer from groups she hadn't heard of...to post some random VK and Jrock videos and such.

I know some obscure-ish (and no-so-obscure-ish) groups that I think some ther people might enjoy, but it's one of those things where you can't really find anything by them unless you know what you're looking for, right? So I'll post some random PVs, as well as give a little info on the bands if it's the first time I'm introducing something by them. I'll probably post some major artists as well as indies, because I know there are plenty of bands people may have heard of, but not heard anything by. If I have a link to download a big version of the video, I'll try to post that as well. Because nothing is better than viewing a rockin' PV full-screen (especially if you put it on your PS3 so you can watch it on the TV XDD). Also, I just want the chance to post some total fail as well Because it's fun to laugh at fail. XDD

So, without further ado, I present to you the first installment of Becca's PV Corner (and I'm looking for a good name for this as well - so any suggestions, please comment <3). I would like to additionally refer to this particular selection as "Two Indies and a Major (Fail)". Because that's what I'm posting - two PVs by indies groups, and one by a major artist whose PV (and song) fails completely - at least in my opinon. XD Agree with me? Don't agree with me? Vote in the poll at the end of the entry. XDD

BECCA'S PV CORNER Volume 1
aka, Two Indies and a Major (Fail)
Artist: Matenrou Opera / 摩天楼オペラ
Song: alkaloid showcase

Download: MegaUpload

Comments: I still LOL every time at the keyboardist Ayame’s wrist-waving - it’s like dramatic arm-flailing (Sara will get that, LOL), but halved. XDD It’s so funny. And I know it’s not really a comment about the music or whatever, but I think Sono looks totally hot in that hoodie thing. XDD

I think I ended up finding this PV on a rotation site and downloaded it because I’d heard their name and was curious about them. I really like it - this is from their first single alkaloid showcase, and is also on their Gilia album. This is one of those songs that grows on me more every time I hear it. Kind of a melodic rock song - lots of keyboard/synth sounds.

Finally, their name means “Skyscraper Opera” which (apparently) is meant to be symbolic of the mix of modern and classical elements in their music - as well as my guess as to why the PV starts out with a skyscraper. ;D

Mini-Profile: A new-ish (became active in early 2007) indies visual kei band consisting of five members, they are on KAMIJO of Versailles’s Sherow Artist Society label. The current lineup consists of Sono on vocals, Yuu on drums, You on bass, Ayame on keyboards, and Anzi on guitar.

OHP: Matenrou Opera (Japanese)

Artist: chariots / チャリオッツ
Song: cold pray

Download: @ Yume no Sekai

Comments: Riku has a very silly hat in this PV. But I don’t fault him for it - I think he pulls it off OK...ish. I don’t like the chin-strap thing or stupid feather collar Reiya is wearing, but...this is indies VK, so you’re gonna see some bizarre outfits and makeup, right? Kind of a plain PV, but it gives you an idea of their sound and style. (Low budget. XDD) This song is off their single Jade / cold pray.

The only reason I initially looked up something by this group is because I kept seeing them in Cure over and over (and over and over) - and kept thinking they looked pretty cool. And they have a pretty eye-catching logo (see below) - so it showed up well when flipping through a Japanese magazine where your eye automatically tries to find anything written in English LOL. I will also say that this group has one of the most un-Google-able names EVER. D’oh.

Riku’s voice is a little rough (and there are a few points in this and a few of their other songs where he sounds - at least to me - borderline off-key) - but they’re still fairly new, so I’m betting he will keep getting better with time. chariots also released a few earlier songs that sound like older GazettE tunes (which kind of irritates me purely because I am a GazettE fan - there is one that is starts out nearly identical to the intro of Nausea & Shudder - Yui, I think?), but I think once they define their style a little more they could be really good. X3

Mini-Profile: Another new (December, 2007) indies VK band consisting of five members, they are on the UNDER CODE PRODUCTION label. The lineup consists of Riku on vocals, Akito and Tomo on guitar, Yuuri on bass, and Reiya on drums. (I can't tell you how difficult it was for me not to spell "Ruki" and "Reita" instead of "Riku" and "Reiya" throughout this entire post just out of sheer habit. LOL)

Artist: Koda Kumi feat. Fergie / 倖田來未
Song: That Ain't Cool

Download: zShare (I don’t know why you’d want to, but I suppose someone somewhere would like it. Actually, since artists like Koda Kumi and Hamasaki Ayumi frequently disappear from YouTube and Veoh, you may need to download it in order to view it. :( Sorry!)

Comments: Yes, Fergie - as in Black Eyed Peas Fergie. No, I don’t know why. But let me start off by saying I don't mind Koda Kumi in small doses. I actually kind of like her Kingdom album - most of the (good) songs from that album made it onto my giant mixed playlist that gets turned on every day at work. Granted, there are over 350 songs on said playlist, so she doesn’t come on ALL that often, but still. (Sara abhors her - it was so funny because the entire 3 weeks she was here visiting, my iPod was like, stuck on Koda Kumi songs. EVERY TIME we’d get in the car, like 8 of them would come on and she would dive for the iPod going, “NO!” so she could fast forward. XDD) I will also say I am not so much a fan of Fergie. The two of them together...EPIC FAIL. I hate this song. Mostly because of Fergie, but even though I generally like/don’t mind Koda Kumi, I’ll admit that she doesn’t do much to save her own song. It is insanely repetitive, and just plain annoying, in my opinion. So meh.

Mini-Profile: Koda Kumi has been releasing music as a pretty successful solo artist since 2000. Her style usually leans towards hip hop. She was previously on the Avex label, but I believe she’s with Rhythm Zone now. (And you can kiss the fattest part of my ass if you think I’m going to look up any information on Fergie for you. :D)
