Stats

Here are some fun stats concerning the big game this weekend.  Check 'em out if you wanna be able to impress your friends with your knowledge. I've done the research, now you can take advantage of it.

Here's something interesting. The FSU football team is #9 in the nation in yards per game, only giving up 269.7 yards per game. However, in scoring defense, there are 31 teams better than our average of 19 points per game. W. Michigan, our next opponent, is #15 in yards allowed, with 280.7, just 11 more than FSU, but #48 in points allowed per game (20.4) . The fact both of these teams gives up so few yards but lower in the points allowed goes to show that opposing offense are having to go fewer yards to score. So obviously, the offenses aren't helping the defenses any in the field position game. So let's examine the offenses.
FSU's offense is ranked #47 in scoring offense, averaging 25.9 ppg, and #65 in yards gained, averaging 319.7. UWM is #60 in scoring, with 23.8 ppg, and #81 in yardage gaining 319.7 ypg. So FSU is going 12.3 yards for every point they score, and UWM is gaining 13.4 yards per point.
In W. Michigan's favor, they are better than FSU at 3rd Downs (38.2% as compared to 37.2%) and 4th Down Conversions (70.6% against 40%), and in turnover differential (+10 to -8)
The point to all of this is that FSU is a better team in fluff stats, but in the stats that usually correlate directly to outcome, WMU has the edge. Should be a good game.
