How many years did I spend dreaming of Visual Kei? Since A-kon 16. I'd round it up to around 3 years of wasteful wishing.
Not that I don't still like it. I do like a few of the bands. Essentially, it was like a bad grunge or goth phase. Although when I compared it to being like a goth, my friend refuted vehemently that they are not the same thing. What did I desire throughout this stage?
Razored bangs
Top layers
Neo-mullet
Different Citizenship
Thousands of dollars to waste on terrible EPs and omnibus collections
An understanding of the language
Dumb overpriced clothing
Visual Kei is the indie glam scene that is sweeping the world. Kids in Europe get all the bands first. Which doesn't make sense. Don't the bands have to fly over the U.S. to get there? I say kids, because no matter how old a Jrock fan is, they will have the mentality of a retrad 6 year old. Or just a bitchy 13 year old girl.
I made some great friends through my V-kei years. But none of them go to school with me and we never really hung out outside of school anyway. So I don't even see them anymore. Well, Meghan counts, I still see her.
Wait, did I just write something that made me seem like I hate Vkei now? I don't. I just have the courage to can all the suspect acts and cut to the chase. Listen to good ones, don't worry about cosplaying as that really cute Oshare guitarist. Although the only Jrocker I can say I cosplayed more than once is Chiba. And he is the opposite of what Vkei should be. He's fat, naked, covers his hair, and just cakes his face in comical make-up schemes. Vkei boiz are impossibly skinny, clothed to the T with goth shreds, have the most amazing hair stylists, and look way too beautiful in make-up. In fact, you'll want a sex and ethnicity change when you see how gorgeous some of these guys look when they are made up.
Nowadays Visual Kei simply provides a sense of nostalgia and embarrassment with a dash of lulz. I cannot think about it without laughing. If I had to recommend an experience package to someone that is curious about Vkei, I'd give them a copy of Moonchild and a one-way ticket to fandom hell, aka anime cons and Jrock Revolution.
