The Charioteer

I am reading The Charioteer by Mary Renault.
I keep wanting to claw at my face with how awesome it is and with all the feels it is giving me.

Sometimes it gets so that the only thing is just to say, ‘That's what I'd like to feel twenty-four hours a day; but, the hell with it, this is how I feel now.'

Alec doesn't have the energy to be happy. He's running on fumes. He is relieved that he doesn't have to be as worried for Ralph as he was.
Alec was worried for Ralph because Alec worries about all his friends, and because he could see Ralph was slowly getting to the end of his tether, what with not ever getting a boat again, and being with Bunny, who was bad for him, and he worried about Ralph and Bunny breaking up, too, because lonley + self destructive is not a good look.

Sandy calls them something from a classical education, except sometimes he repeats what Bunny calls them, which is not fair, since it should be unrepeatable. But Bunny infuses it with so much bitterness, it sounds almost sweet in contrast when Sandy says it.
Sandy is actually relieved the war-wounded-heroes have each other, if only because it gets them both away from and un-available to Alec.

Ralph is sometimes referred to as the Tortured Torch-Bearer, until some PoWs get back and they meet actually tortured men. And sometimes Hand-in-Glove.
Ralph and Laurie together are handless and legless - the joke goes that handless gets legless.
