fix you (2/2)

Not one day seemed gloomy for the 2 teenagers. They ate every meal together, passed love notes during class and watched the stars while they laid side by side on the roof top.

There was a dance organised by the hospital's nurses, for the teenagers that stayed at the hospital. Hoya asked Sungjong to be his date with a sunflower and a lemon candy, both Sungjong's favourite things. The dance was held in the hospital's garden, where they hung fairy lights and white ribbons on the trees. Sungjong thought it couldn't have been more magical when Hoya proved him wrong. After slow-dancing beneath the twinkling lights, Hoya took Sungjong's hand and led him to the hedge maze at the edge of the garden. It was quiet and devoid of people, letting them be alone for the first time that night.

"Hoya, what are you doing?" Sungjong asked, laughing nervously as Hoya dropped to his knee. The older boy looked up at him and grinned, taking out a plain gold band from his tuxedo pocket. "I know its too early to even think about marriage," Hoya started, fidgeting. "But I want you to know that I do believe we'll be forever." He took Sungjong's hand and slipped the ring onto his 3rd finger. "So take this as my promise, that I'll be someone to lean on; whenever, wherever." Hoya smiled so brightly that Sungjong's chest hurt. "We'll be infinite."

Their lips met and they kissed slowly under the dark night sky. "I love you," Sungjong whispered into his boyfriend's ear. Sungjong wouldn't have thought that anything could go wrong that night, when the unthinkable happened.

Call it a gut feeling, but Sungjong had a empty pang in his stomach before Hoya collapsed on the ground. The party broke apart when a hysterical Sungjong arrived back, tears streaming down his face, his voice hoarse from calling for help.

--

Since he was 5, Hoya was diagnosed with leukemia. He somehow managed to keep all of this from Sungjong; scheduling his appointments on days where Sungjong had therapy, obediently taking his meds and eating healthily to ensure he didn't have a relapse.

Sungjong paced nervously outside, his clothes starting to give off steam as he waited by Hoya's room door. The doctor came out soon after, his face grim. "Hiya kid, you better take a seat while I tell you this."

"Howon's condition took a turn for the worse."

"He was actually diagnosed with a few years left to live after he relapsed back in 2007, but I think what made him push on, was you." Sungjong's tears didn't stop flowing, the boy already sobbing at what was coming next. "I'm sorry, but all I can tell you is to cherish all the time you have left with him."

Sungjong curled up into a ball and cried until his eyes were puffy, coughing. He fell asleep on the bench, and was carried back to his room by the nurses on duty the next morning.

-

A week went by before Sungjong stepped into Hoya's room. He thought his heart shattered into a million pieces when Hoya roused awake, his face bursting with happiness when he saw Sungjong. "Hey, I thought you weren't ever going to come." Sungjong sat on the bed and lied down, cuddling into Hoya's chest. "Why didn't you tell me?" He asked quietly, silently crying into Hoya's chest. "I didn't want you to be sad." Hoya stroked his lover's head gently, eventually succumbing to tears as well.

"You see Sungjong, I was as broken as you the first time we met."

-

The next months flew past. Hoya's condition did continue to deteriorate and he grew too weak to even get out of bed. Sungjong warmed him up with his fire when the nights were too cold for Hoya to handle. The older boy even joked about how his power was a blessing in disguise after all.

Sungjong was with Hoya when the latter passed on, dead in the night when everyone was gone.

-

"Hey buddy." Sungjong said to the little boy sitting on an armchair opposite him. "Why the sad face?" The little boy sighed. "Dr. Lee.." Sungjong smiled and dugged into his shirt pocket, producing a lemon candy. "Here, take it." The boy popped the candy into his mouth and smiled. "So can you tell me what's troubling you now?" Sungjong looked at his desk as the kid began telling him his problems. A framed picture of Hoya sat just beside his computer screen, smiling at Sungjong everyday.

Hoya didn't only give Sungjong happiness, he fixed Sungjong even when he was broken too.
