A Very Barrowman Burns Day

Jan 25, 2009 20:56

Happy Robert Burns Day! I missed my holiday alert email last weekend (it's the only way I ever remember anything) so I wasn't prepared and will probably have my little Burns supper later in the week.

I thought I'd John Barrowman it up this year, especially since raebird pointed me to a video last year of Barrowman explaining to an American audience about Burns suppers and then singing a song his mother used to sing to him. I think I watched it about six times in a row. :)

(The Burns-related bit starts at around 3:40)

The Banks o' Doon (Third Version)
~Robert Burns

Ye banks and braes o' bonie Doon,
How can ye bloom sae fresh and fair?
How can ye chant, ye little birds,
And I sae weary fu' o' care!
Thou'll break my heart, thou warbling bird,
That wantons thro' the flowering thorn:
Thou minds me o' departed joys,
Departed never to return.

Aft hae I rov'd by Bonie Doon,
To see the rose and woodbine twine:
And ilka bird sang o' its Luve,
And fondly sae did I o' mine;
Wi' lightsome heart I pu'd a rose,
Fu' sweet upon its thorny tree!
And may fause Luver staw my rose,
But ah! he left the thorn wi' me.

I also think Mr. Barrowman, being a man with a reputation for getting... a little bawdy occasionally, would appreciate this Burns poem, merely because the title sounds vulgar to modern American ears, and at heart he's still a nine-year-old boy.

"Johnie Lad, Cock Up Your Beaver"

When first my brave Johnie lad came to this town,
He had a blue bonnet that wanted the crown;
But now he has gotten a hat and a feather,
Hey, brave Johnie lad, cock up your beaver!

Cock up your beaver, and cock it fu' sprush,
We'll over the border, and gie them a brush;
There's somebody there we'll teach better behaviour,
Hey, brave Johnie lad, cock up your beaver!

It really just means "turn up the brim of your fur hat" or something like that. Oh, English language, your variety can be so entertaining. Robbie Burns could get a bit bawdy himself; I think he'd approve.
