Chicks of Hope

I feel really good today! This is nice, because research paper final drafts came in this morning, along with 20 voice recordings to evaluate, and my brother and his fiancee are visiting Saturday/Sunday. It's going to be another one of those weeks.

But for now, I'm spreading cheer, and by cheer I mean chicks and bunnies. Literally. And by "literally," I mean literally.

It's that time of the year again! Or almost - I'm trying to get a jump on some things before finals and the holidays.

What time of the year? Heifer time! They have a gift called the Basket of Hope, and I think that's just what we all need. It contains rabbits (which I talked about here a couple of years ago) and chicks. Chickens are fantastic, y'all, especially for people with hardly any resources. They're so simple. They take just a little space compared to a lot of livestock, they can eat scraps and bugs, and they're a very renewable resource. They reproduce easily and then there are all those extra eggs, which might be the only protein a child gets for most of the year. Eggs can also be sold. One of the things I like best is that chickens are a great part of sustainable agriculture: if they're managed right, particularly using large movable coops, they can quite efficiently clean up the insect pests and weed seeds from a garden or crop field area before planting, reducing or eliminating the need for chemical pesticides and insecticides.

So! If you don't mind, and remember this makes me happy, I've gotten a Basket of Hope in your honor, my friends, because you're very important to me and this is one way I like to tell you so.

ETA: If you are like our dear David Boreanaz and find chickens freakish and scary, just remember these chicks won't end up anywhere near you. :)

I have cards! Or I will, when I make them. They will feature chicks. Or not, your choice. :) It helps me if you leave your address, even if you're sure I already have it; and international addresses are just fine. Only I can see the poll results, but if you'd rather email me your address, my email's in my profile. I like doing this, so please don't decide not to sign up just because you're not sending cards to people. :)
