Squee. I finished Scott the Bear, my first crocheted thingie! Please convince me that John Barrowman doesn't need this just because Lion Brand named the pattern Scott.
I used Red Heart Sport (the cheapest yarn available, seriously cheap) and I could get at least one more bear out of my $3 worth of yarn, two if I reversed the colors and made a shocking pink bear with brown paws.
This pattern was single crochet all through and it seemed pretty easy except for the parts where I had to decrease. Is that what you call it in crochet? I mean where you end up with fewer stitches at the end of the round than you had when you started. In my pattern it said "Single crochet 2 together over next single crochet" and I couldn't find any instructions on how to do that, so I made something up. It worked, but it also left gaps which I had to sort of darn closed after I finished the piece. Oh, and it also took me awhile to figure out if I was crocheting in the front or back of the stitches, so there are some funny-looking lines around his head and snout.
He doesn't have his eyes or nose, and I can't decide if I want to do them. I don't like putting on plastic pieces. Maybe I could embroider the eyes and nose.
The most surprising thing I learned is that these crocheted toys are done in pieces and sewn together: head, body, legs, arms, snout, tail. For some reason I thought, with the exception of color changes, it was all one unbroken strand of yarn.
ETA: And now I have corrected the spelling in my subject line. I will never consistently spell "weird" right. ::headdesk::
