Doctor Who: Robot

Watched the 1974 Doctor Who serial Robot this week, then watched it again because my mom wanted to see "that homely, curly-headed man who was on when we were over there." She was also excited when the Scarf she's seen me wearing made an appearance.

(The pictures are bigger and better if you click on them, but I didn't want to make this post huge, and I have a small screen, so I went with thumbnails.)

Several really good Benton moments, including some Sarah Jane interaction and one where he was gloating with the Brig. Aww. I like Benton!

Sarah notices Benton's promotion; Benton is concerned, even when he has had to perform duties that distress her.

Benton serves tea!

He can't stand up to Sarah Jane.

Good Sarah Jane - she's still Intrepid Girl Reporter. Sad to say, that changes drastically once the TARDIS gets underway in The Ark in Space and, if I recall, doesn't improve much until Genesis of the Daleks. (RN watched one episode of this serial because she loved The Sarah Jane Adventures and wanted to see what SJ was like when she was young.)

I loved the King Kong theme. Can't help but. Misunderstood, manipulated non-human giant, pretty human girl who shows sympathy and gets loved on in the form of a ride through the sky in the monster's clutches, deposited on the top of a tall building... necessarily tragic ending with overtones of the hubris and cruelty of modern man. And cheesy doll special effects! What's not to love?

It was also nice to see the introduction of Harry, who I think had as many costume changes as Sarah Jane. Good old Harry!

And good old Brig!

~You know, just once I'd like to meet an alien menace that isn't immune to bullets.

Doctor: Jelly baby?
RustyMom: What's a jelly baby?
Rusty: It's kind of like a gummy bear. Except it's shaped like a baby.
RustyMom & RustyDad: [burst out laughing]

(That was my reaction when I looked up jelly babies. I have trouble with anthropomorphized food anyway, but a human baby? It's worse than Peeps! Hee.)

"I adored Elizabeth. And in her own discreet way, I suspect that she adores me. I could be mistaken, you know."
