Email I got from a student today:
hi teacher how are you & how is your vocation?
thank you for helping me & i will never forget that hope you get a great life
I taught him in his beginner class and again in intermediate. He stayed after class a few times this semester to talk to me about things he was struggling with. Mostly I just listened, and I gave him a few suggestions about academic practice and health and lifestyle. It sounded to me like he may have been depressed or homesick, so I was sympathetic.
It was very nice of him to send a note. :) I don't know why we form more of a connection with some students and not others, and why the same student may have an entirely different kind of relationship with different teachers. Just one of those mysteries of the profession, I guess.
