I have a horrible backlog of things I want to/should do, and I procrastinate even in the matter of entertainment :') From time to time I'm reminded that it is a very bad thing as it makes me miss good things, and today is such a day.
DENNOU COIL IS FANTASTIC.
The caps is necessary because it's been a while since I've been on an immersing anime marathon like this. I opened the first episode and then couldn't wait to watch more. This is a show that has both interesting world building and charming interaction between characters. The animation is simply beautiful, especially in action-y scenes.
The setting is extremely elegant: a cyberspace on top of real life that can be accessed by special glasses which are basically personal computers.
Augmented reality as they call it. It feels so convincing and I think we'll see it in the future given the stuffs engineers come up now. The technology creates a duality: on one hand is the real world (or meatspace as it is called on the Internet), on the other hand is the fantastical virtual reality with magic-circles like computer codes written on the ground, ofuda-like tags that heal your body or shoot laser beams, and pets looking like
this. Of course there are dangers in this virtual world coming from
these guys. Still no one really gets hurt or in real danger. Or so it seems.
Dennou Coil is a children show and the protagonists are sixth graders, much younger than the average protagonists of shows I consume now, and most of the shows are children doing children things in the dual worlds described above. It brings back a sense of nostalgia to me about the time I got into all kinds of troubles because of my curiosity (admittedly I still do now). On the other hand, there are crazy twists happening during the shows and grave topics are discussed such as dealing with losses (there are tons of tearjerkers), with uncertainty, with what is real and what is not (fitting, given that they're living in a world where virtual reality exists side by side with the physical realm). It'd be interesting to look at what the show presents philosophically but right now I'm just happy with the great ride I was given.
The icing on the cake: this show has one of the most awesome anime grannies ever XD
