After seeing Hamlet in Sheffield on Saturday night, I headed to London on Sunday morning.
I checked my big bag at St Pancras and took the tube to Covent Garden, where I ate at Neal's Yard Salad Bar. They have this Brazilian rice bread that's really good, but the service is so bad and nothing else on the menu is that impressive, so I don't think I'll go back again.
Then I hopped back on the train to my hotel, the Marriott in Kensington (because I was able to stay free using points):
Then I was off to the Victoria and Albert Museum:
Where I stayed looking at as much as I could before they closed and kicked me out...
Then I was off to the Tower Hill tube stop for the Jack the Ripper walking tour (finally--I've been meaning to go to this every time I go to London):
Afterward I walked along the river all the way back to Covent Garden--it was a Sunday night so I pretty much had the riverfront to myself. I was hoping to eat at Covent Garden, but nothing was open, so I took the tube back to my hotel.
I woke up to the tube strike, but the line I needed was running (woohoo!) so I got to Westminster Abbey easily enough for the London Walks tour:
Lots of interesting history there. For the Lymond fan, the most interesting thing is that Margaret Lennox's tomb is in the same room as Mary Queen of Scots', and it's covered in words all about the various royal figures to whom she's related.
Then since most of the tube lines were down, I just wandered through London, taking pictures here and there, and ate lunch at Sagar, an Indian place in Covent Garden that has a separate vegan menu. Sadly the food was bland and terrible, though; I won't go back there either.
And finally I walked all the way to St Pancras, at which point my shoulders and feet were killing me from lugging my overnight bag all over London. And then I retrieved my giant suitcase, got on the Eurostar, and was off to Paris!
