http://rusty-halo.com/wordpress/?p=2706 One of the nice things about being well-connected in the NYC animal rights community: I got to go to the
Candle 79 5th anniversary party last night. Candle 79 is one of the best high-end vegan restaurants in the country (if not the best; I'd say Blossom in NYC and Millennium in San Francisco are its only real competition).
It's too expensive to go there more than once or twice a year, though, so the main bonus of going last night was FREE FOOD AND DRINKS. They had little mini risotto balls topped with butternut squash, these amazing focaccia things with fresh tomato and basil, little mini pizzas with vegan cheese and pizza toppings, tiny little pakoras topped with mango chutney, a couple of deep-fried dumpling things, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Oh, and fresh raspberries drenched in chocolate on top of a buttery cracker for dessert, and these really amazing rich chocolates as you were leaving. It was kind of a game, to see how often you could manage to push through the crowd and snatch an appetizer before they were all devoured. And did I mention the free drinks? I had two glasses of the best sangria ever, and a great microbrewed beer. (Unfortunately I had to rush home to give Lucifer his shot, so all this was within an hour, but still. I crammed three good hours of eating and drinking into that one hour!)
Oh, and the most surreal part: they paid for pedi cabs to take people home! Obviously I couldn't take one home to Brooklyn, but I took it to the 86th street subway station. I've never ridden in a pedi cab before! Beautiful night, beautiful city, good food, very fun. And the total cost? $9, via tips to the bartender and pedi cab guy.
I haven't been out at all pretty much since Lucifer was diagnosed, so it felt really good to go out and do something, even if I did have to rush home early to feed him and give him his shot.
Other things I'm meaning to do sometime soon:
*
Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night at MOMA
*
Gothic: Dark Glamour exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology
Meanwhile,
jaydk and I have booked our London hotel and are now planning the specifics of our trip (OMG! Less than a month!!!) and I think I've found a catsitter who is experienced and isn't going to charge me an arm and a leg to watch my cats (*fingers crossed*). There are no words for how much I'm looking forward to this London/Stratford trip; it's the one thing that's kept me going all year.
And... we booked a hotel and bought tickets for
Gallifrey One, so I guess that means we're going. I remain wary, but I suppose it's worth trying it out once, and if it's awful I never have to go back. I did very much enjoy chatting with the new Who fen I managed to find at DragonCon, so let's hope it's worth it. Plus I really am curious to hear what the new Who writers have to say. :)
Current Mood:
hopeful
